Gloria Gonzalez Ortega

Gloria González Ortega nació el 26 de diciembre de 1935 en La Habana, Cuba, hija de Francisco González y Ana María Ortega. Se graduó como arquitecta en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de La Habana y, al establecerse en Puerto Rico, rehizo y revalidó su título en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, donde se graduó magna cum laude en 1971, formando parte de la primera clase de dicha Escuela.

Ejerció su profesión principalmente en San Juan, Puerto Rico, destacándose en proyectos de diseño y planificación. Fue firmante de la Carta Constituyente del Colegio de Arquitectos y Arquitectos Paisajistas de Puerto Rico en 1978 y mantuvo una activa participación en el AIA y en el Colegio, formando parte de sus Juntas de Gobierno.

En 1994, se convirtió en la primera mujer en presidir el Colegio, abriendo el camino para las arquitectas en Puerto Rico y fortaleciendo la visibilidad y profesionalización del gremio. En 2019, el CAAPPR le rindió un reconocimiento por su legado y aportación a la arquitectura puertorriqueña.

Más allá de su carrera, Gloria disfrutaba la lectura, viajar y hablar francés. Como madre, abuela y nuestra querida “Mima”, fue guía, ejemplo y amor constante.

Le sobreviven sus hijos Gabriel Francisco, Juan Enrique y Alina María; sus nietos Arturo, Cecilia y Diego; y numerosos familiares, amigos y colegas.

It is with deep sorrow and immense love that we announce the passing of Architect Gloria González Ortega, who passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 89.

Gloria González Ortega was born on December 26, 1935, in Havana, Cuba, to Francisco González and Ana María Ortega. She earned her degree in Architecture from the School of Architecture at the University of Havana and, after establishing her professional life in Puerto Rico, revalidated and completed her architectural degree at the School of Architecture of the University of Puerto Rico, graduating magna cum laude in 1971 as a member of the first graduating class.

She practiced architecture primarily in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she distinguished herself through her work in design and planning. In 1978, she was a signatory of the Constituent Charter of the Puerto Rico College of Architects and Landscape Architects and maintained an active role in both the AIA and the College, serving on its Boards of Directors.

In 1994, Gloria González Ortega made history as the first woman to serve as President of the College, paving the way for women architects in Puerto Rico and strengthening the profession through greater visibility and professional standards. In 2019, the College honored her legacy and lasting contributions to Puerto Rican architecture.

Beyond her professional achievements, Gloria had a deep love for reading, travel, and the French language. As a mother, grandmother, and our beloved “Mima,” she was a source of guidance, strength, and unconditional love.

She is survived by her children Gabriel Francisco, Juan Enrique, and Alina María; her grandchildren Arturo, Cecilia, and Diego; and numerous relatives, friends, and colleagues who will deeply miss her.
