My Papi Part Two: 

It is a treasure to have a song that my grandfather dedicated to me that I can always listen to and share with my kids and grandkids. When I think of Papi, I will not just remember his beautiful music, I will also remember his spikey five o’clock shadow kisses, his hospitality with others offering up wine and bonbons (he always had a hidden stash), his strength (Rumor has it he did Judo. He once put Matt, my husband, in a chokehold during one of his demonstrations), his love of sweets that I most definitely inherited, his firm hugs, his traditions be it on holidays and the everyday and most of all his deep love for all of us, his family, more demonstrated by actions than words. Je me souviens. 

He will be missed by his children, Tania Martino, James Saliba, Jerry Saliba and Mary-Edith Bazelais, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will take comfort that he is with Jesus and his beloved, Yolaine. 

My Papi: Part I

Joseph “Joe” William Saliba joined his heavenly father on May 11, 2023. He was born in Haiti and later moved to Miami. As his oldest granddaughter, I always knew my grandfather had another life before I came into the picture. Other Haitians would stop me to ask if I was related to Joe since we shared the same last name. At one point, he owned the theater in Haiti named the Triomphe. I was always so proud of that little bit of fame. This was certainly a more glamorous time but his greater legacy will always be his dedication to his family. 

He was a devoted husband, having celebrated 66 years of marriage with his late wife, Yolaine. On their 50th wedding anniversary, he composed and dedicated a song called “Tu Souvien Tu”, showcasing his deep affection and admiration. His children will remember his character, strength and principles he instilled in them, inspiring them and future generations. His grandchildren will remember the fun times they spent with “Papi”, including an epic trip to Georgia, many trips to Disney, steak sundays and present-announcer on Christmas day. We grandkids really got to see the very best of him.

He was also very passionate about his music, playing at least three instruments. His main love was the keyboard. He merged his love for his music and grandchildren with his sophomore album entitled “Spirtual Healing”, dedicating each song to a grandchild (Mine was called Sweet Melisse). On our visits, he would often call us in his dedicated music room so we could give us a private recital with his latest hits, giddy with excitement.
