Maria Isalia Gil Ceballos passed away February 7, 2021 in Miami, Florida from natural causes. Maria was born March 30, 1933 in Medellin, Colombia to Felipe and Josefina Ceballos. Maria Isalia, her late husband Johnson Gil, and their family of eight moved from Medellin to New York City in Spring 1973 with dreams of giving their children every opportunity North America had to offer. She worked as a high fashion seamstress until she retired. In 1982 she relocated to Miami, Florida where she was a resident and enjoyed the year-round warm weather for her daily power walks. Maria Isalia was the beloved matriarch of the Gil family and as such, dedicated her life to her family’s success, encouraged them to push boundaries, and taught them to never settle for small dreams.
Maria Isalia was independent, strong willed, and taught us all that the joy that fills the soul can be found in everyday moments like climbing trees with her grandchildren, sharing ice cream under a tree, and going on long walks while being mindful of the beauty that exists around us. Her second love was her garden and her orchids, she was blessed with a green thumb. She could make anything grow. She was a spiritual Catholic that took lessons from all faiths and paths to God. She believed in the love and mercy of God. In times of distress, she would often offer this quote from Isaiah 41:10, “Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”
Maria Isalia is survived by seven of her eight children (her son Evan Harold Gil passed in the 1990s), Omar Gil, Henry Gil, Esneider Gil, Isalia Falconery Gil-Martin, Luz Mirian Gil, Johnson Jr. Gil, and Humberto Gil and her fourteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
A COVID-restricted private funeral mass will be held at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Miami. Burial will be at Caballero Rivero Dade South. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.
