Maria Teresa Green, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, artist, and mentor to generations of young women, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026. She was 80 years old.
Born Maria Teresa Urra y Ancheta on August 23, 1945, in Havana, Cuba, Maria grew up as the only girl among an older brother and a spirited group of cousins. Those who knew her in those early years remember a girl who was brave and feisty, who swam like a fish and was always the first to say yes to an adventure. Havana shaped her, and she carried its warmth and vitality with her for the rest of her life.
She came to the United States with her family, attending school in Miami, FL and Bloomfield, NJ, before settling in Miami, the city that would become her home. In 1968, she met Marc I. Green, and the two were inseparable from that moment on. They married and built a life together rooted in love, laughter, creativity, and service, raising two children, Susie and Michael, and pouring themselves into their community. After Marc's passing in the fall of 2025, Maria carried their love with her everywhere.
Maria had a gift for seeing the world beautifully and making it more beautiful in return. She was a graphic designer in the truest, most skilled sense, working by hand, before computers changed the craft, and a painter whose creativity expressed itself in everything she touched. Art was not just what she did; it was how she saw and shared.
Her loyalty was unwavering. She was the kind of person who showed up for her family, her friends, and her community. She took care of everyone around her without hesitation. Fiercely devoted, she not only poured herself into the people she loved, she also was a help and encouragement to anyone she encountered.
For more than 25 years, she dedicated herself to the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, where her impact is immeasurable. She inspired countless girls and their families to join, to serve, and to believe in their own strength. Together, she and Marc were recognized with Good Samaritan Awards, a reflection of the generosity and quiet kindness they brought to everything they did. The generations of brave empowered young women she helped shape are perhaps her greatest legacy and a living testament to everything she stood for.
As a mother, Maria gave her children something rare and lasting: she inspired them to do everything she herself had never had the chance to do. The adventures they pursued, the achievements they reached, the lives they built — none of it would have been possible without her, and without Marc beside her. That same spirit of wonder and possibility extended to her grandchildren, her niece and nephews, and their children, whose lives she filled with magic, encouragement, and the unshakeable belief that the world was theirs to explore.
Maria Teresa is survived by her daughter, Susie Green-Mateu, and her family; her son, Michael Green, and his family; and all those whose lives she touched with her fearless spirit, her creativity, and her boundless heart.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marc I. Green, her parents, her brother, and her aunts and uncles. She is with them all again now.
Brave, creative, and deeply loyal — she lived fully, loved deeply, and left the world braver than she found it.
