January 10, 1929 - March 3, 2025
Mary Lou Waddell, age 96, peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion. Born in Washington, D.C. to Wilhelmina and George Schoolmeester, she shared her early years with her beloved siblings, George and John. Mary Lou's life was filled with grace and purpose, touching the hearts of all who knew her.
In 1948, Mary Lou moved to Miami, FL, where she attended Barry College for Women. Her passion for tennis led her to become a tennis instructor for over 40 years and a cherished member of the Royal Palm Tennis Club in Pinecrest, a community she joyfully joined in 1965. Beyond the tennis courts, Mary Lou's adventurous spirit saw her traveling extensively throughout the USA and Europe on cycling excursions.
Her favorite place in the world were the islands of Sanibel and Captiva, which she and her family considered their “home-away-from-home” since 1959.
As a devoted mother, Mary Lou's love knew no bounds. She is survived by her seven children: Christine Lobel, John Waddell (Angeli), Marcia Brazil (Steven), Alice Rose, Barry Waddell (Anita), Louise Mashburn (Frank), and Veronica Ponder (Ty); as well as 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Her role as a true matriarch was evident in her unwavering love for her family, matched only by her fondness for her daily cup of coffee.
Mary Lou's life was a testament to her deep faith and passion for Jesus Christ. Her love for God shined brightly in her daily actions, Bible studies, and prayer life. Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life". Her commitment to her church was unwavering, where she led Bible study groups and volunteered regularly, becoming a pillar of strength and guidance to her community. Mary Lou's faith wasn't just personal; it was a beacon that guided her interactions, offering comfort, wisdom, and support to those around her. She inspired her children and grandchildren to seek their own spiritual paths, leaving a legacy of faith that will endure through generations.
Now she rests peacefully with our Father in heaven. Mary Lou's life will be celebrated by all who knew her, and her memory will forever be cherished.
