Born in Miami to Joseph and Dolores Matcovich, Melva embodied the very best of humanity: kindness, love, strength, joy, loyalty, altruism, humor, intentionality, and an infectious zest for life. She was a woman who truly impacted everyone she met.
A proud graduate of Miami Jackson High School, she remained deeply involved with her classmates over the years, helping organize reunions and nurturing lifelong connections. Melva was a leader in the truest sense, not by seeking the spotlight, but by serving others, leading by example, and lifting up those around her.
Throughout her life, she was truly the most caring, thoughtful, and incredible woman. She was an angel among us. Words can never fully capture the depth of her extraordinary character. She loved fiercely, gave of herself generously and never complained, even in the hardest times. She laid down her life for her family and friends, always putting others first and making every occasion unforgettable with her warmth, love, creativity and effervescence.
Melva lived life to the fullest, finding joy in both simple pleasures and grand adventures. She golfed and bowled for much of her life, as a member of the Dade County Bowlerettes and Riviera Country Club and she was a beloved figure in those communities. She enjoyed the fun and camaraderie of bingo, the excitement of traveling (especially cruises), and the serenity of boating and being near the ocean. Some of her happiest moments were spent at her cherished second home in Key Largo, Florida, surrounded by family and friends. In each of these communities, Melva was a radiant presence who was loved, admired, and always made others feel welcome and valued.
She loved her family beyond measure and her devotion to them and to her many dear friends was the foundation of her remarkable life. She led with grace and humility, making everyone feel valued, seen, and loved.
Melva was truly one of a kind, strong yet gentle, smart and funny, resilient, classy, radiant, loyal, and deeply intentional about how she lived and loved. She showed us all what it means to live with passion, joy, love, and intentionality.
She is survived by her children: Margaret “Meggy” (Michael) Fishelberg, Charles “Billy” Fredrick William Depkin V, Daniel “Danny” (Clarece) Depkin, and Darlene “Dee Dee” Depkin Mayers; Grandchildren: Zachary Fishelberg, Margaret “Peggy” Fellowes, Aubrie Depkin (partner Rolf Exceus), Hannah (Dakota) Mayderry, Carolyna (Bryan) Arvelo, and Noah (Bailey) Mayers; Great-grandchildren: Brooke Marley, Yalena, and Yemaya; and many beloved nieces and nephews, along with countless family members and friends whose lives continue to be brighter because of her presence.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Charles “Bill” Fredrick William Depkin IV; her sister, Betty; her brothers, George, Donny, Jack, and Glenn; her granddaughter Peggy’s beloved lifelong partner, Agye Fellowes; and a wide circle of cherished family and friends whose lives were brighter because of her presence.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 3PM at Miami Springs Adventist Church, where we will gather to honor her memory and the extraordinary impact she had on all of us.
Melva’s love, laughter, and zest for life have left an indelible mark, and she will live on, cherished in our hearts forever.
