October 17, 1939–October 30, 2022
83 years old
On Sunday, October 30, Captain Miguel “Mickey aka Bocina” A. Barreto, a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather made his flight West. He was 83.
Born to Adolfo Barreto and Manuela Cruz, Mickey was an aerospace engineer graduate of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. From January 1961 to August 1989, he was a commercial pilot (engineer, first officer, and captain) with Caribair and Eastern Airlines. As a pioneer of Puerto Rican aviation, he was one of the first pilots to operate a commercial flight across the Atlantic (San Juan to New York) for a carrier based in Puerto Rico.
Throughout his career, Mickey was certified and flew multiple equipment types including Convair CV-240, Convair CV-440, McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and MD-80; Boeing 727-100, 727-200, and 757-200; Lockheed Martin L-1011; and Airbus A300.
His passion for flying was only surpassed by his love of family. He was married to Victoria (“Jean”) - “The best decision I have made in my life”—for nearly 59 years. Mickey also had a passion for baseball, especially his beloved Miami Marlins, having played catcher in little league growing up. Fun fact: One of his teammates was Roberto Clemente.
Mickey never hesitated to say his greatest accomplishment was his children. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather and loved spending time with family no matter what the activity.
In his words, “I did it my way.”
He is survived by his wife Victoria E. Barreto; children Miguel Angel Barreto, Jr. (Marjon Duyvelaar Barreto), Jean Marie Barreto-Stults (Wesley Stults), Raphael Armando Barreto (Martha Barreto), Joan Marie Barreto, and Gilberto Justino Barreto (Jennifer); grandchildren Harrison Michael Barreto, Brandon Nicholas Barreto, Lexis Amanda Cruz (Jomar Cruz), Victoria Barreto, Jose Armando Barreto, Alejandro Mercedes Barreto, Gabriel J. Barreto, and Keira Jolie Barreto; and great grandchild Luca Jay Cruz.
