

Otilia E. Fonseca, born on October 16, 1945, in Bayamo, Oriente, Cuba, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of strength and resilience. In 1961, she immigrated to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan. Otilia attended Battin High School in Elizabeth, NJ.
Her dedication to education led her to Columbia University School of General Studies, where she earned a full scholarship for her undergraduate degree. She continued her studies at Montclair State University, receiving a Master’s degree in Educational and School Psychology while serving as a Teaching Assistant.
Otilia faced life's challenges with incredible tenacity. She conquered bipolar disorder and kidney failure through her unwavering hope, the love of family and friends, and above all, her deep faith. She turned her experiences into an opportunity to advocate for others and serve as a spokesperson. Her strength was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Olimpo Fonseca; her mother, Otilia H. Fonseca; and her brother, Dr. Olimpo A. Fonseca. Otilia is survived by her nieces and their spouses, Becky F. Gonzalez (Fonseca) and Miguel F. Gonzalez, Sandra F. Chetelat (Fonseca) and Aaron Chetelat, along with her cherished great-nieces and great-nephews: Nicolas Hodges, Kassandra Gonzalez, Michael Gonzalez, Lucia Gonzalez, Cecilia Gonzalez, Mia Chetelat, Alexa Chetelat, and Lucas Chetelat.
Otilia’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be remembered for her love of family, faith, sense of humor, and her indomitable spirit. May she rest in eternal peace.
