RAFAEL MARTINEZ was called home to Our Lord on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. He was born in Cuba, in the small hamlet of Esperanza, Villa Clara on the 31st of October. The exact year is still in question, with 1925 being the best estimate of his birthyear.

Rafael, nee Lucilo Rafael Martínez Alba, was known to all who loved him as Felo. He was a family man with a strong yet gentle, caring, and generous nature.

Felo was often described as independent and industrious. Raised on a family farm, he was adept as a farmer and horse trainer. In his early teens, he left the Cuban countryside for new adventures in the city of Havana where he met his future bride, Aida. He served in the Cuban army. However, when he completed his army tenure, Felo, who preferred to be in command rather than be commanded, opted to pursue business opportunities.

The year after his marriage to Aida, the young couple was blessed with the birth of their first daughter, Zoe. Knowing the Cuban revolution placed his family at risk, he emigrated to the United States. Working in Brooklyn as a dishwasher, he saved enough money to have his wife and child join him in New York. Throughout their lives, Felo and Aida selflessly sponsored and supported countless family and friends immigrating to New York and Miami in their struggle to make the United States their new home.

Renovating NYC high rise buildings, Felo became a skilled painter. His move to Miami was precipitated by his desire to save the life of his second daughter, Aixa, whose ill health responded well to the Florida sunshine. He established a home there for his family while gaining a reputation of excellence in his professional trade.

A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Felo lived for his family. He was a balancing force for his life partner, Aida, grounding her and actualizing her big plans. Together, they formed the core from which the family grew and flourished.

A quiet man, Felo packed a lot of wisdom and wit into few words, often setting them to original “decimas”. Though small in stature, his surprising strength both impressed and comforted. Opponents considered him the “King of Dominoes”. As Lito and Bisu, he shared his sense of fun, love of the outdoors, and many adventures. Felo cultivated plants, delighting all with the fruits of his garden.

Felo was a patriarch to his extended family. From acting as father to many, to mentoring his nieces and nephews, to chauffeuring the tribe, he was the one on whom everyone could depend. Felo touched the lives of many people who are better for having met him. Almost everyone whose life crossed his path can testify to his generosity and readiness to step-up when someone needed help.

Felo is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Zoe and Rolando Espinosa, and Aixa and Brian Kydd, his grandchildren, Caitlin Kydd, Elizabeth and Bryan Espinosa and their children Vincent, Quirina and Kithara, and Benjamin and Lizz Espinosa, their daughter Evelyn and their expected baby. He is also survived by his sister Maria Mari, and the couple, Magalys Perez and Miguel Diaz, who lovingly adopted him as a second dad.

The family extends our deepest gratitude to everyone who loved and cared for our beloved Felo.

RAFAEL MARTINEZ fue llamado por Nuestro Señor el miércoles 10 de noviembre de 2021. Nació en Cuba, en el pequeño municipio de Esperanza en la provincia de Villa Clara, el 31 de octubre. El año exacto todavía está en duda, siendo 1925 la mejor estimación.

Rafael, cuyo nombre de nacimiento era Lucilo Rafael Martínez Alba, fue conocido por todos los que lo amaban como Felo. Era un hombre fuerte, pero a la vez apacible, cariñoso y generoso, dedicado a su familia.

Independiente y trabajador describen a Felo. Criado en una granja familiar, era un granjero y entrenador de caballos. En su adolescencia, dejó el campo cubano en busca de nuevas aventuras en la ciudad de La Habana donde conoció a su futura esposa, Aida. Sirvió en el ejército cubano. Sin embargo, como Felo era un hombre que prefería estar al mando que ser mandado, cuando completó su obligación militar, optó por buscar oportunidades comerciales.

Un año después de su matrimonio con Aida, la joven pareja fue bendecida con el nacimiento de su primera hija, Zoe. Sabiendo que la revolución cubana ponía su familia en peligro, el emigró a Estados Unidos. Trabajando en Brooklyn como lavaplatos, ahorró suficiente dinero para que su esposa e hija se unieran a él en Nueva York. A lo largo de sus vidas, Felo y Aida patrocinaron y apoyaron de manera altruista a innumerables familiares y amigos cuando inmigraban a Nueva York y Miami, luchando hacer de los Estados Unidos su nuevo hogar.

Renovando edificios de gran altura en Nueva York, Felo llego a ser pintor experto. Su mudanza a Miami fue precipitada por su deseo de salvar la vida de su segunda hija, Aixa, cuya mala salud respondió bien al sol de la Florida. Allí estableció un hogar para su familia mientras ganaba una reputación de excelencia en su oficio profesional.

Devoto esposo, padre, abuelo y bisabuelo, Felo vivió para su familia. Él era una fuerza de equilibrio para su compañera de vida, Aida, anclándola y actualizando sus grandes planes. Juntos, formaron el núcleo a partir del cual la familia creció y floreció.

Un hombre reservado, Felo podía condensar mucha sabiduría e ingenio en pocas palabras, un talento mostrado en sus décimas originales. Aunque pequeño en estatura, su fuerza era impresionante y a menudo reconfortante. Sus oponentes lo consideraban el "Rey del Dominó". Como amante de la diversión, este Lito y Bisu compartió su amor por el aire libre y muchas aventuras. Felo cultivó plantas, deleitando a todos con los frutos de su jardín.

Felo también fue el patriarca de su familia extendida. Asumió los deberes de un padre cuando lo necesitaban, fue mentor de sus sobrinos, y hasta sirvió como chofer de la tribu. Él era el único en quien todos podían depender. Felo conmovió las vidas de muchas personas que agradecen haberlo conocido. La mayoría cuya vida cruzó su camino pueden testificar de su generosidad y disposición a responder cuando alguien necesitaba ayuda.

A Felo le sobreviven sus hijas y yernos, Zoe y Rolando Espinosa, y Aixa y Brian Kydd, sus nietos, Caitlin Kydd, Elizabeth y Bryan Espinosa y sus hijos Vincent, Quirina y Kithara, y Benjamin y Lizz Espinosa e hija Evelyn y su bebé esperado. También le sobreviven su hermana María Mari y la pareja, Magalys Pérez y Miguel Díaz, quienes lo adoptaron amorosamente como segundo padre.

La familia les ofrece nuestro más profundo agradecimiento a todos que amaron y cuidaron a nuestro querido Felo.
