I'm going to miss my Popo, but I'm so happy for wonderful memories with him and Maria. I feel blessed to have had my grandfather for 47 years of my life. Memories of my parents taking us to visit him as children, continued when I had my own. What a blessing for them to be able to have not only met but got to know their great grandfather. I adored his smile, laugh and especially his stories of way back when he was in the US Army 82nd Division Paratroopers. He played an important role in our history, as he took part in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. He loved boxing and at 82 years old I have a short movie clip of him showing off his moves, and boy did he still have them! After the Army he made his living in a body shop working on cars. In fact I'm almost sure there was one parked in the back of his house that he was working on for his neighbor before he moved to Miami. In his later years he worked nearly 7 days a week as a security guard. I don't ever remember Popo not working.

Not too long ago my husband and I took my grandfather to Santa Anita Race Track (Sport of Kings), because he loved to bet on horses! After a few minutes there, I quickly learned my Popo spoke another language that only his fellow patrons at the track understood. “The Sport of Kings” earned its title long ago when horse racing became popular with the aristocrats and royalty of the British Society, but for now my grandfather was just happy being part of the excitement of “And their off!” to the thundering sound of the large stallions racing by him. What an amazing afternoon and one I will never forget. 

His work and life ethics are what we will lose as a society. He was a strong and healthy man who early in life taught me about forgiveness and letting the past go. At 18 years old that conversation was so profound for me; I carried that lesson with me throughout my lifetime. I'm so happy to have been part of his bloodline, because he himself was nothing but goodness. I will always love you Popo and miss you terribly, but my memories will carry me until we meet again.
