Mr. Santos Caraballo

Santos Caraballo, age 86, passed away on Sunday, January 7th 2024 in Miami, FL. Santos was born on March 22, 1937 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba to Antonio Caraballo and Isabel Martinez. He was the second oldest of 5 brothers and sisters. In 1968, he was the first in his family to leave Cuba, in search of freedom and a better future in Puerto Rico during very difficult times. Santos married Celestina Zoraida Garcia by proxy in 1969 to initiate the complex process of her emigration from Cuba to Spain, where they married in the Catholic Church in 1972 before returning to Puerto Rico to start their new lives together in exile. Their daughter Limarys was born in Santurce in 1973.

Santos proudly founded Joyeria Puerto Rico, a small business in Calle Loiza, Santurce, from 1968-1981. He was passionate about his work as a jeweler, goldsmith and silversmith, gem and diamond-setter, and watch repairer. Beloved by his customers for so many years, he and Zoraida would always treat those he worked with and served as if they were family–and almost every repair or sale involved a “cafecito.”

In 1981, to be closer to their only other family outside of Cuba, his brother Bienvenido, sister-in-law Berta, and niece Bertica, Santos and Zoraida left their first home in exile and started anew in Miami, Florida, where their younger daughter, Marilys, was born in 1983. They founded Miami Jewelry Mfg. in 1981 as a small family business that served the community for over 40 years, until they retired in June 2023.

When he was not “en la joyeria,” Santos never said no to a game of dominos – and could usually be found spending time with his family, teaching his grandkids how to play dominoes and asking for their help navigating the mysteries of the iPhone, enjoying a Sunday lunch of lechon, black beans and flan, watching Punto Guajiro, Tres Patines or El Chavo del Ocho on YouTube on his phone. He loved long drives, classic cars, and animals of all kinds, frequently tending to the many birds that visited the backyard, and dealing with the roaming ducks and chickens in their Miami neighborhood.

Santos is survived by his wife, Zoraida; Limarys, son-in-law Ruben Gonzalez, and grandchildren Noel and Isabel; Marilys and her partner, Nelson; as well as 4 of his siblings and their families.

Santos was a man of purpose, courage, curiosity, faith, and kindness – forever asking questions, dreaming up new ventures, experimenting with his tools and gadgets, always looking toward the future. He made an impression on everyone he met, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in Peace.

A visitation for Santos will be held Friday, January 12, 2024 from 6:00 PM, with an overnight vigil to 9:45 AM Saturday at Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135. The Prayer Service and Eulogy will take place at 8pm. The burial will be on Saturday, January 13, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Flagler Memorial Park, 5301 West Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33134.

Santos Caraballo, de 86 años, falleció el domingo 7 de enero de 2024 en Miami, FL. Santos nació el 22 de marzo de 1937 en Pinar del Río, Cuba, hijo de Antonio Caraballo e Isabel Martínez. Era el segundo mayor de 5 hermanos y hermanas. En 1968, fue el primero de su familia en salir de Cuba, en busca de libertad y un futuro mejor en Puerto Rico, en tiempos muy difíciles. Santos se casó por poder con Celestina Zoraida García en 1969 para iniciar el complejo proceso de su emigración de Cuba a España, donde se casaron por la Iglesia Católica en 1972 antes de regresar a Puerto Rico para comenzar su nueva vida juntos en el exilio. Su hija Limarys nació en Santurce en 1973.

Santos fundó con orgullo la Joyeria Puerto Rico, una pequeña empresa en Calle Loiza, Santurce, de 1968 a 1981. Le apasionaba su trabajo como joyero, relojero, platero, y engastador de piedras y diamantes. Amado por sus clientes durante tantos años, él y Zoraida siempre trataban a aquellos con quienes trabajaban y atendían como si fueran familia, y casi cada reparación o venta involucraba un cafecito.

En 1981, para estar más cerca de su única familia fuera de Cuba, su hermano Bienvenido, su cuñada Berta y su sobrina Bertica, Santos y Zoraida dejaron su primer hogar en el exilio y comenzaron de nuevo en Miami, FL, donde su hija menor, Marilys, nació en 1983. Fundaron Miami Jewelry Mfg en 1981 como un pequeño negocio familiar que sirvió a la comunidad durante más de 40 años, hasta que se jubilaron en junio de 2023.

Cuando no estaba en la joyería, Santos nunca decía que no a un juego de dominó y, por lo general, se le podía encontrar pasando el rato con su familia, enseñando a sus nietos a jugar dominó y pidiéndoles ayuda para navegar los misterios del iPhone, disfrutando de un almuerzo de lechón, frijoles negros y flan, viendo Punto Guajiro, Tres Patines o El Chavo del Ocho en YouTube en su teléfono. Le encantaban los viajes largos en carretera, los carros clásicos, y los animales de todo tipo, y con frecuencia se encontraba atendiendo los pajaritos en el patio y lidiando con los patos y gallinas vagabundos en su vecindario de Miami.

A Santos le sobreviven su esposa, Zoraida; Limarys, yerno Rubén González y nietos Noel e Isabel; Marilys y su pareja, Nelson; así como 4 de sus hermanos y sus familias.

Santos era un hombre decidido, valiente, curioso, y bondadoso–siempre haciendo preguntas, imaginando nuevos proyectos, experimentando con sus herramientas, y mirando hacia el futuro. Dejó una gran impresión en todos los que lo conocieron, y su familia y amigos lo extrañarán mucho. Que descanse en Paz.
