Siomara Victoriana Dube, a beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2024, at the age of 90. She is survived by her daughters Siomara “Sandy” (wife of John) and Maricela (wife of Raul), grandchildren Jason, Daniel, Sofia and Christina, great-granddaughters Juliana and Brianna, sisters Rosita and Paulina, and many nieces and nephews.
Born on June 15, 1934 in Havana, Cuba, Siomara was the eldest daughter of Avelino Hernandez and Rosa Enriquez. She grew up on a military base in La Cabaña with her seven siblings, where her fighting spirit first began to shine. At just 14, she attended a boxing match and met “el rubio,” who would become the love of her life. After a romantic courtship and a blessing from her father, Siomara married Gonzalo “Gonzi” Geronimo Dube in 1953, welcoming their first daughter, Siomara del Carmen, a year later.
In November of 1962, Siomara and Gonzalo made the difficult decision to leave their beloved home and country fleeing the Cuban communist regime in pursuit of freedom. Arriving in Miami, Florida with only the clothes on their backs and a single bag each, they were given winter coats, pocket change, and a one-way ticket to snowy Lawrence, Massachusetts, where relatives had settled. Over time, Siomara and her family created a new home, joyfully welcoming their daughter Maricela in 1964 and son Allen Paul in 1966.
In 1973, the family once again made their way to Miami- this time permanently. They built a “finca” in the Redlands, and Siomara began work as the school nurse at St. Theresa Catholic School where she and her husband both served the school and Archdiocese of Miami until 1982 when she retired to assist in raising her first grandson, Jason.
Despite the immense grief of losing her husband and son in 1988 and 1989, Siomara’s faith and love for her family remained unwavering. In 1995, she proudly became a United States citizen, a milestone she cherished. Her legacy continued to grow with the births of her grandchildren, Daniel and Sofia in 1998 and 2002, and great-granddaughters Juliana and Brianna in 2014 and 2017.
Throughout her life, Siomara was a nurturing presence, caring for her grandchildren and others with love and devotion. She expressed her affection through cooking, always asking for little more than a trip to her favorite store, “El Dólar.” Siomara will be lovingly remembered for her strong will, unwavering faith, sweet tooth, love for plants and music, affection for dolls and teddy bears, and the kindness that made her a mother and grandmother figure to so many.
Siomara Victoriana Dube’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. A celebration of life mass will be held at Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables, Florida on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at 10:30 am.
