Shawn always had an amazing outlook on life. From his initial diagnosis, he started to teach those around him what really mattered most in life. Shawn could have easily given up and been angry for the hand he was dealt, but instead, he fought his battle with grace, dignity and tenacity. He taught us that cancer is hard, but everyone has their own version of “hard” in life. His motto was strong and pointed, “If you see me in a fight with cancer, pray for the cancer.” Shawn and his wife Kelly fought and exhausted every treatment option to overcome his cancer. No stone was left unturned. On Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, Shawn won that battle.
Shawn is survived by his loving wife of almost 8 years, Kelly (nee Koenig) and their two beautiful children, Landon and Madeline. Shawn was an amazing husband and proud daddy. His wife and kids adored him. Shawn embodied all of the traits of a family man. His family was his driving force and motivation to fight his disease. Landon and Madeline always viewed their dad as a real-world superhero. Shawn left his children with a tremendous life lesson; when things get hard, go be a superhero and fight!
Shawn is also survived by his wonderful parents, Ken Calvey (Rose deceased) and Ann Glaser (Mike), amazing siblings, Bridget Mischak (Rick), Mike Calvey (Marcina), Kelly Dzik (Jeremy) Erin Gaub (Josh) and Brian Hlywiak (Chelsie). His fantastic in-laws, Walter and Mary Jo Koenig and sister-in-law Amanda Geyer (Eric). He is also survived by his grandparents Mary and John “Jack” Powers, and the late Marjorie and Raymond “Gus” Calvey. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews, a prominent nephew to many aunts and uncles and a beloved cousin. He was a dear friend to many. If you didn’t have the pleasure to meet Shawn, you missed a great opportunity to laugh, hear about Notre Dame football, his love for golf, the Browns and stories of his firehouse and family. His personality was contagious, after five minutes with him you would complain less and laugh more.
Shawn was a dedicated Cleveland Firefighter for almost 9 years. Being a firefighter fit Shawn’s superhero personality. He was happy and energetic for that call to serve. For those brave enough to take that call, it’s a difficult and dangerous choice. Shawn knew it was demanding physically and mentally and Shawn was so honored to serve the City of Cleveland. He was also an avid golfer and loved all things sports. If he wasn’t at work or with his family, he was on the golf course, hopefully in the fairway. This year he got to fulfill a lifelong dream of being a patron at The Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia. It was a day he cherished because being a patron means you’re not a cancer patient. He loved that the most.
He was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and left an indelible mark on every single life that he touched.
