Janice was a graduate of West Elkton High School in Preble County, where she met the love of her life, Ronnie Carter, who passed away two years ago. They were married 69 years.
Given her date of birth, Janice was part of the Silent Generation. This will make anyone who knew her laugh, because she absolutely loved to talk, maybe more than anything else. She was even known to keep a telemarketer on the line for a chat. It wasn’t just idle chatter though. Janice had an endless number of stories to tell. Often they were funny or filled with some kind of advice, many involved family and covered nearly a century.
For more than 30 years, she ran a tax preparation and bookkeeping business. It was often joked that “counseling” should have been added to the end of the name as many customers came for tax help and then ended up spending much more time getting advice on any number of fronts.
Janice’s father, Columbus Hines, was a well known high school basketball coach and later inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. She was a cheerleader for his West Elkton teams and never missed a game when he moved on to New Lebanon Dixie, where he won two state tournaments in the 1960s.
Through the years, she remained an avid sports fan. Starting in the early 1990s, Janice and Ronnie became Bengals season ticket holders, keeping their seats for about 20 years. They also joined with a group of fans and started traveling to away games, making nearly two dozen trips.
Beside raising a family that was the center of their lives, Janice and Ronnie enjoyed a lifetime of travel together. It began in the 1960s, when they would go on adventures with Janice’s parents, spending weeks at a time covering much of the eastern half of the U.S. in a travel trailer. Their travels would eventually take them to all but two states. Together, they went on five Caribbean cruises, two Alaskan cruises and three riverboat cruises. And over the past 25 years, they also enjoyed many extended family vacations to the Outer Banks.
More than anything, Janice squeezed all she could out of her time here. She was always on the go and was still leading her line dancing and exercise classes at Sycamore Creek Apartments until just days before she took ill.
Her love for family could hardly be matched. In essence, she was the keeper of the family, one of the few who kept lines connected with relatives no matter how far away they lived or how many cousins removed.
Janice also had a great love for reading and talking about the Bible and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Janice is survived by children, Ron (Kimberly) Carter, Joseph (Rebecca) Carter and Michelle (Rodney Earley) Anderson; grandchildren, Rachel (Brian) Palmer, Jay Carter, Nicole Pittman, Brittany (Ari Combs) Byrum, Brandon Anderson, Benjamin (Tatijana Smith) Anderson, Brian (Kelsey) Anderson and six great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2-4 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Anderson Funeral Home, 40 North Main Street, Springboro OH 45066. A Celebration of Life will follow with Conrad Flowers officiating.
