

During World War II, his family fled Amsterdam and moved to a small town in the Netherlands near Utrecht. At the end of the war, in 1946 they emigrated to the US and settled in Ridgewood, NJ. After being drafted by the US Army, he married Dorothy Askew July 19, 1953. The couple resided in Anchorage, AK, for two years where Bob received his US citizenship. They returned to Ridgewood in 1955. They lived in Midland Park, NJ from 1957 until 1963 during which time he earned his Engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology). The family moved to Middletown where Bob took a position with the City of Middletown engineer’s office. He worked for the City as Assistant City Engineer until 1979, when he opened his own civil engineering and surveying firm, RW Consultants. He was known as RW to his employees and clients. He built an office on Central Avenue in downtown Middletown and served the greater Middletown and northern Cincinnati area designing roads and subdivisions throughout Butler and Warren counties. After retirement he worked part-time for Cristo Homes and pro-bono for Ohio Living Mt. Pleasant as they expanded their development of senior living homes and apartments. He resided at Ohio Living Mt. Pleasant for over 25 years.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and a member of the Board of Trustees for many years.
Bob is survived by his four children and 12 grandchildren: Linda Bernauer (Kevin), Dallas, TX; Jonathan and Alan Bernauer, Debra Long (Ken), Tulsa, OK; Mallory (Long) Howard (Devin), Robby (Claire Felleter) and Christopher Long; David, Middletown; Steve Carlson and Meg (Carlson) Trodden (Corey), and Buffy Wieneke, and Peter (Tammy Taylor), Berea, OH; Marisa, Max, Eben, and Tessa Wieneke, two great-grandchildren: Eleanor and Adelaide Howard, and one step-great grandchild: Killian Trodden.
