Sylvia was born in Dover, TN, April 30, 1926. A child of the Depression years, she lived alternatively on a farm in Dover and Middletown as her father was able to find intermittent work at Armco Steel. During part of WWII she lived in Clarksville, TN where she volunteered as a worker for the USO. It was there that she met Herbert, an army corporal, who became her husband for a lifetime.
Most of her married life was spent as a homemaker in Middletown, where Herbert worked for Armco Steel. A devoted wife and mother, she lived for her family, seeking to teach her children to reach for the best they could in life. Sylvia believed strongly in the value of a good education. While never being too pushy, she encouraged her children to be their best, as much as possible, while in school. She was a strong woman who would defend her family to the death, if needed. That strength was evident in so many other parts of live. There was no hesitation to confront anyone she felt was treating any of her family unfairly or wrongfully. That strength kept her going as she saw, personally, to the care of her mother and father as they had their own battles with cancer.
There are too many aspects of life to mention, but one other has to be noted. Sylvia also sought to teach her children to honor God and the Church. Though sporadic, at first, she eventually saw to their regular attendance at the Grand Ave. Church of God. Both her and her children grew spiritually under the church’s teaching.
We’ll miss you, Mom. But even though our tears are many, we known that we can say “see you later,” when we all meet again in God’s glorious Heaven.
