

Ruth Elena McClure, long time Midland resident, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010. The oldest of five children, Ruth was born October 13, 1914 to William E. Plunkett and Mamie Baber Plunkett in Umpire, Arkansas. During the Great Depression the family of seven moved to West Texas settling on a farm near Ackerly, Texas. With the early loss of her mother, Ruth shouldered many family responsibilities while still a young girl. Although she had little free time after school work and taking care of her younger siblings, Ruth still found time to enjoy her youth. She attended nursing school for a short time, and eventually took a job in Midland with the phone company. During WWII she met and later married Mac Royce McClure. Mac ran McClure Brothers Humble service station in Midland while Ruth dedicated herself to church, garden clubs, and their son, Don. Mac preceded her in death in 2001. Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Brenda McClure of Midland, TX; grandsons, Nick McClure of Midland and Judd McClure of San Antonio, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Pauline Plunkett of Fort Worth, TX; brother-in-law and wife, Dan and Sarah Wagster of Bend, OR. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Memorial services have been scheduled for 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 7, 2010 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathryn Boren officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
