Elmer Eugene Williams

Elmer Eugene Williams, 82, of Midland, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2011. He was born on February 5, 1929 to Thomas L. and Mamie Moore Williams in Dickens County, Texas. Eugene Williams and Edith Watley met in Dickens, Texas in the 5th grade, and were high school sweethearts. Eugene married Edith, daughter of Tom and Evelyn Watley of Midland, in Dickens, Texas on June 8, 1947. They raised their two sons in the Midland/Odessa area.

Gene worked at Bowen Grocery as a manager from 1957 to 1965, then went on to a career with Frito Lay for 28 years and retired in 1993. Since retiring, Gene and Edith have been very active in their church home at Westside Church of Christ and Meals on Wheels of Midland. Known as “Grumpy”, he was a sweet, wonderful grandfather to four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He and Edith enjoyed camping with their friends and traveled extensively with his brother T. L. and his wife, Sarah. Edith and Gene never had an argument, but where known for not agreeing on anything. Happily married for 64 years, he will be missed by all his family and friends.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leon Williams, and sister, Nelda Martin.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Edith Williams; his sons, Larry Eugene Williams, and wife, Beth, of Hurst, Texas and Rick Williams and Becky White of Midland, Texas; his brother, T. L. Williams of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; and sister, Imogene Elam of Roswell, New Mexico; as well as, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Ellis Funeral Home. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 1:00pm at the Westside Church of Christ (4410 West Illinois Avenue, Midland, TX 79703-5499).
