Ernest, or as he was called by friends, E. V. or Scotty, was born in Winters, Texas 85 years ago on September 19, 1930 to Audra Taylor Scott and Ernest Trailer Scott. He had to become a man at the age of 13 when his father passed away leaving his mother with four children. This event and his faith in God played a pivotal role in the man he would become. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1948 and began studying for a petroleum engineering degree at Howard Junior college but was drafted into the Army.
He married Frances Viola Henderson, also from Big Spring, on December 14th, 1954 in Lawton Oklahoma while he was stationed at Ft. Sill. After a short, four day, honeymoon in Lawton, Frances returned home to Big Spring. Two weeks later, he was sent to Hanua, Germany for a year. He was an Ammunition Supply Specialist, trained at the Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland. They enjoyed a 54 year love filled, faith and family oriented life together.
After returning home, he went to work for Shell Oil Company testing Perma Plugs. In 1962, he went to work for State Farm Insurance Company. He established a successful agency and was awarded many honors and trips abroad for his achievements in sales. He was a State Farm agent for 33 years and 7 months before retiring in November of 1995.
Ernest and Frances were active in Jaycees and Jaycee-ettes until being roostered out. Ernest was in Indian Guides, as well as a leader with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club, Little League, 4-H, attended many piano and ballet recitals. He was an active member of the Midland West Rotary Club for many years, serving there in many capacities. He was always a faithful member of First Baptist Church, serving as a teacher, an usher, and volunteering at the Crisis Center.
