George was born in Snyder TX on July 3, 1927. He graduated
from Midland High School and continued on into the service of
the US Navy and was recalled during the Korean War. He then
retired from the Midland Fire Department after 33 yrs of
service to the community. George was married to Gwendolyn
Maurice Berry on December 17, 1948; they were married 57
years.
George was a charter member of the Inter-Collegiate Rodeo
and helped build the first Rodeo grounds at Sui Ross University.
He enjoyed skeet and trap shooting and won many trophies in
events across the area. He helped to organize the Volunteer
Fire Dept in Greenwood and was on the committee for the
Ranch Rodeo here in Midland. He was also very active in his
church and in his younger days was music minister.
George is preceded in death by his father, John Woody; his
mother, Nora Merritt Woody; both sisters, Peggy Faye Woody,
and Pamela Woody Radloff; his wife, Gwendolyn Berry Woody;
and his grandson Aaron Michael Griffin.
George is survived by his daughters, Gwendolyn Kay Balog,
Scarlette Fay Hydes, & Georgia Gay Briscoe; his grandchildren
Christina Rogers, Michael Blount, Rebecca Tippett, Elizabeth
Ortiz, Sam Butler, Ethan Briscoe, Sarah Perez, Cathy Balog; and eight great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Ellis Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
