Gregory Dean Vines, 60, was healed into the arms of his Savior on the evening of Sept. 19, 2015. He took his last breath in peace surrounded by his family at his residence in Midland, Texas. Born Sept. 24, 1954, to Troy J. Vines and Imogene Cole Vines in Midland, Greg was the sixth of 10 children. Greg had an amazing work ethic and began working with his father as a teenager. Along with his father, uncle and several of his siblings, Greg established Troy Vines Inc. and grew it into a successful business. He took great pride in his role operating the aggregate mine in Pyote from 1981 until his retirement in 2014. Greg had a passion for hunting, but also enjoyed setting up his game cameras to watch all the kinds of wildlife that came to the feeders at night, and he did his best to keep predators away so they wouldn’t frighten off the deer. Greg loved cruising around in the classic cars he had, but also the thrill of racing, and he made many friends at the track over the years.
However, he gleaned the most enjoyment from family and close friends. His hobbies were an avenue to spend time with those he loved. Greg was a giving and kind-hearted man with a big smile on his face and jokes to go around. The auctions at the family reunions will not be the same without him stirring others to laughter – and frustration.
He took pride in his children, and his actions made evident his love for them. Together they recently formed Busy V Investments, continuing the tradition of a family run business. Greg was also known as “Grandad”. Chances are if you knew Greg, you also knew all about his four beautiful granddaughters and his new grandson. He loved spending time with them and had plenty of stories to share along with a glint of laughter in his bright blue eyes.
When receiving news of his cancer diagnosis, Greg immediately rested on faith of the Lord’s sovereignty. He knew physical healing is not always the answer, yet he received much spiritual restoration and healing in the months preceding his death. His main focus was sharing this reality with those close to him. He has now received the ultimate healing in the presence of Jesus. This is our comfort in knowing although our earthly lives fade, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
Greg is preceded in death by his father, Troy J. Vines who passed Jan. 1, 1993. He is survived by his daughter Charlotte and her husband Chris Elliott and their daughters Vaughny and Gayla of Weatherford; his son Chaney and his wife Christy Vines and their children Katelynn, Julia and Michael of Midland, Texas. He is also survived by his mother Imogene Vines; sister Sandra McKaskle; brother Dale Vines and his wife Nancy; brother Johnnie Vines and his wife Sandra; sister Cheryl Casbeer and her husband Wilbur; brother Jody Vines and his wife Becky; sister Cindi Goodman; brother Tracy Vines and his wife Sherri; and brother Stacy and his wife Robyn, all of Midland and his brother Mark Vines and Tony Panian of Abilene. He also has numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces who will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Ellis Funeral Home. Celebration of Greg’s life will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Stonegate Fellowship Church with interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park both located in Midland.
