Jan Riley Brockett peacefully passed away on April 14, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on December 31, 1928 to Ruth Hales Riley and Jewel Riley in Wichita Falls. She spent her preschool years living on a farm within walking distance of her much loved grandparents. After finishing first grade she moved with her parents to Wichita Falls and lived there, with the exception of two years spent on the family ranch in Clay County, Texas, until she graduated from high school. College followed at Texas Tech where she met and, after graduation, married C.H. (Broc) Brockett. She graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration. After brief stints in Snyder and Fort Worth, Jan and C.H. settled in Midland in 1955 where they spent the rest of their lives.
While C.H. established and ran several oil field services and supply businesses, Jan’s time was occupied by raising their two children, Hal and Bonny. This involved active support in all of their school and extracurricular activities. She assisted C.H. with his various businesses over the years and she was also very involved with his civic service duties, including the Jaycees. In 1968, she was named Midland’s Outstanding Jaycette.
Jan was an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for years, holding many offices in the church and its women’s organizations. In her later years, she moved to First United Methodist Church and enjoyed the many opportunities it offered.
Midlife brought the pleasure of watching her son Hal flourish in his chosen field of law and happy times spent at their home on Lake LBJ. After Jan’s daughter Bonny passed away from complications resulting from Juvenile Diabetes, some of her heartbreak was offset by the joy that her two granddaughters, Jennifer and Becky, brought to her life. Jan was actively involved in the girls’ lives and felt abundantly blessed that she got to watch the girls grow up, complete their educations, and make happy marriages complete with the arrival of her four great grand-children, Brock, Hudson, Jack and Lane. After Jan was widowed she moved to Manor Park. She enjoyed international travel and much bridge.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Bonny; and husband, C. H. Brockett.
She is survived by her son, Hal Brockett; grand-daughter, Jennifer McNeel, her husband Ryan McNeel and their sons, Brock and Hudson; grand-daughter, Becky Martin, her husband Jarred Martin and their sons, Jack and Lane; Jennifer and Becky’s mother, Sheri Brockett; her brother, J.B. Riley and his wife, Beverly of Burkburnett; nieces, Kenda Draper, her husband Buzz Draper and their sons, Evan and Aaron of Plano, Kayonne Riley of Orlando, Florida and nephew, Matt Riley and his wife Christina of Dallas.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Midland, with Dr. Tim Walker officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hospice of Midland, 911 W Texas Ave, Midland, TX 79701, or American Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
