Richard Wayne Camp, age 63, of Midland, TX passed away April 2, 2016. He was born in Oklahoma City, OK on January 30, 1953 to Hubert and Ruby (Howard) Camp. Rick moved to Amarillo, TX as an infant, attended Amarillo schools, and graduated from Caprock High School in 1971.
Rick married Jean Knight on September 1, 1978. They became the proud parents of four children and two grandchildren.
As a small boy, Rick lost his father, causing him to gravitate towards a service station around the block from his childhood home. Before he was old enough to be legally employed, the owner of that station, Don Olsen, allowed Rick to take on odd jobs such as changing tires, oil, and washing windshields. By the time he was 15, Rick was managing that station. In 1972, Rick was offered the opportunity to move with Don Olsen to Midland and manage the Exxon Service Station at the Intersection of Midkiff and I-20.
In 1974, at the age of 21 years, Rick purchased West Side Exxon located at the Intersection of Midland Drive and Illinois, making him the youngest Exxon Service Station owner in the United States. Eventually, Rick acquired two more Exxon Service Stations, one in Midland and one in Odessa. He purchased Wall Street Automotive in 1989, which is still operated by the Camp Family.
Rick was a generous and loyal man. He had several long-term employees with values similar to his own. These men continue to carry on Rick’s legacy of “quality service, at an affordable price” at Wall Street Automotive.
Rick was a race car enthusiast. His race car “Unfinished Business,” became legendary in Midland and the surrounding region. Members of his race car team remained his closest friends until the day he died.
Rick was preceded in death by his daughter, Ellen Lois Camp. He is survived by his wife, Jean Knight Camp; a daughter, Laura Camp; a son, Drew Camp and wife Deeann; a daughter, Katherine Camp and husband Dustin Chandler; and two grandchildren, Lillian Chandler and Emmett Chandler all of Midland, TX; a sister, Claudette Judd and husband Glenn of Georgetown, TX; a brother, Kenneth Camp and wife Mai of Denver, CO and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 8, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, TX. His wishes were to be buried beside his daughter, Ellen. Graveside services will be held July 5, 2016 in West Harpswell, ME. His gravestone will be inscribed with the words “Unfinished Business”.
