Betty Britt Clatterbaugh, 89, of Midlothian, VA, passed away peacefully at home on January 1st, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Laurinburg, NC, in 1936 to Ernest and Thelma Britt, Betty was a woman whose life was devoted to family, friends, and faith. She lived a life rich in love, kindness, and unwavering support for those she cherished.
Betty graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, VA, where shortly after she met her beloved husband, John, at a dance at the Staunton VFW. They shared 70 years of marriage and built a life full of love, laughter, and memories.
As a child, Betty and her siblings moved frequently through the South, living in small towns, yet always close to family. Her bond with her mother, sisters, and grandmothers shaped her into the resilient and spirited woman she became, a woman whose strength, laughter, and perseverance touched everyone who knew her.
Betty worked in Hagerstown, MD, where she was employed at a printing company before serving as a secretary at St. Mary Goretti High School for 20 years. Her dedication to her work and community was matched by her deep commitment to her church and volunteer efforts. She was an active member of several church groups in Hagerstown and Midlothian. She also volunteered with Hospice of Washington County and was an avid supporter of her children’s school band and theatre programs, traveling for band events and being a dedicated presence at every performance.
Family meant the world to Betty. She cherished her husband of 70 years, her son, and her daughter, with all her heart. She was blessed with three sisters, with whom she shared a close and enduring bond. Visits with family across the South and Northeast were frequent, and her home was always open, welcoming, and full of love. She lived by the motto that “things will work out,” and she instilled this belief in her children, reminding them always to look on the bright side and to rely on God and one another, no matter what life may bring.
Betty leaves behind a legacy of compassion, love, and resilience that will continue to inspire her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her two children Stewart and Roxanne, and five grandchildren, John Harper and Wade Everett Clatterbaugh, and Paul Jr., Ivan, and Amalia Fantl all of whom were the light of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Thelma, her loving husband John, and her dear sisters Diane, Greta, and Joan.
