Carroll S. Savage, 67, of Midlothian, unexpectedly passed away February 3, 2017. She had recently been diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had begun chemotherapy. However, she suffered a pulmonary embolism followed a short time later with a heart attack. Carroll was a retired elementary school librarian of 31 years, starting out at Jacob Adams Elementary in Henrico County. After a few years she became a stay-at-home mom to start a family. When her youngest child entered school, Carroll went back to Jacob Adams but did not like the cross-town commute. So after one year she began a long career in Chesterfield County as the librarian at Swift Creek Elementary.
Carroll was preceded in death by her parents, Louis A. Schumann Jr. and Sue Harper Schumann; sister, Janet Schumann Ramsey; aunts, Mildred Ryland Harper, Mary (Bruce) Harper Heisler, Francis Derieux Harper, Doris Schumann Butler; uncle, Charles Bruce Harper Jr.
Carroll is survived by her husband of 45 years, James L. Savage; daughter, Lindsey Savage Hacker; son-in-law, Brian; granddaughter, Abigail Ryland; daughter, Kathryn Savage Anderson; son-in-law, Richard; granddaughter, Riley Harper; sister, Martha Schumann Synnott; brother-in-law, Scott; niece, Amanda Lee; nephew, Andrew Connor; brother, Robert H. Schumann; sister-in-law, Deborah; nephew, Robert Brian; niece, Corinne Hargrave; sister-in-law, Betty Savage Maggiore; niece, Lisa Ann; nephew, Albert Michael; aunt, Jean Hamlett; nephew, John Carter Ramsey; niece, Ashley Ramsey Lauter.
Carroll was a 1967 graduate of Huguenot High School, a 1971 graduate of Radford College, and a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She was most at home reading stories to students in the library’s story well, conducting book fairs for the school, and generally instilling a love for reading in her students. She enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada with her family, probably because the long conversion van rides gave her plenty of time to catch up on her reading. In her last years at Swift Creek Elementary, Carroll organized a book club which met monthly and she enjoyed staying active in it during retirement. During those last few years Carroll and Jim went on a few ocean cruises but she most enjoyed last year’s river trip on the Rhine from Amsterdam to Switzerland.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, February 7, at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian. Carroll was an avid reader, so in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either www.hermasreaders.net which is an organization set up by Frank Beamer honoring his mother. Its purpose is to promote the power of reading and literacy in grades K-3 throughout the state. Or to www.nancycancer.com which is the Nancy Yeary Women’s Cancer Research Foundation whose mission is to improve the cure rates for women with ovarian, uterine, endometrial, cervical, and other gynecological cancers.
