

Dorothy Claire Breynaert Briegel, age 86, died on August 5, 2016, in Richmond, Virginia. Born in Manchester, New Hampshire on September 28, 1929, she attended local schools, including Manchester High School West, graduating as Valedictorian. After high school, she attended the University of New Hampshire, became a member of Mortar Board, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS degree in mathematics. Following UNH, she became an actuarial student at Monarch Life Insurance Company in Springfield, Massachusetts and while employed there passed all required examinations to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. At Monarch she met her future husband, Heinz A. Briegel, who also became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Dorothy and Heinz moved to Richmond in 1966, where she was first employed by the actuarial consulting firm Meidinger and Associates, and then by the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, where she became Pension Actuary. Dorothy enjoyed traveling and took beautiful pictures of the many places she visited.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Jennie Breynaert of Manchester, New Hampshire and by her brother, John A. Breynaert of North Weymouth, Massachusetts. She is survived by her husband of 54 years; by daughters Karen Baker of Venice, Florida and Diana Briegel of Richmond, Virginia, and son Rolf Briegel (Lisa) of Venetia, Pennsylvania; and by her grandchildren Brittany Keegan (David), Shannon Lane, and Amanda, Alex, and Jason Briegel.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on August 11th at Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel at 1020 Huguenot Road in Richmond. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, August 12th at St. Luke Lutheran Church at 7757 Chippenham Parkway in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of New Hampshire Foundation at 9 Edgewood Rd., Durham, NH 03824 (“Fund # H523 in memory of Dorothy Breynaert Briegel” on the check memo line).
