Edgar George Bowers

Edgar George Bowers, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed on June 20, 2020 in Midlothian, Virginia. He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on October 2, 1939, to Edgar and Florence (Anderson) Bowers and partly raised by his aunt Hazel Bowers, referred to as an angel by those who knew her, when his mother died when he was 4. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Bowers. He is survived by his children Lisa Bowers and Eric Bowers (wife, Stephanie and grandsons Wes and Guthrie), his wonderful sister, Betsy McIntosh, who he thought the world of, Betsy’s two children, Bryan McIntosh and Leigh (Jim) Shannon, and his adored brother-in-law Jim Williams (Anne) and sister-in-law Mary Robertson (Brian), of whom he and his wife became guardians after the death of their father. Ed and Peggy gladly brought these two teenagers into their new family of two little ones, making Jim and Mary eternally grateful for the grace brought into their lives. Ed is pre-deceased by his other treasured brother-in-law Dan Williams (widow AJ Williams). He and Peggy met while working at the Mighty Mo in Takoma Park, Maryland, where he impressed her with his smile. They married on December 16, 1961, and spent nearly 57 years by each other’s side, through sickness and health. As a member of Northwestern High School’s golf team, his golfing talent was discovered by George Washington University, who gave him a full 4-year scholarship. He was honored as a member of GW’s All-Decade Team of the 1950’s. He continued to play golf for much of his life, earning Club Champion titles at Montgomery Country Club, and volunteering with First Tee, where he combined his passion for golf, love of kids, and belief in character education. After receiving a BS in Accounting from George Washington University, he joined IBM. He was true blue to IBM, which gave him opportunities to work in accounting and management and to work in Paris as European Director of Accounting for 5 years, allowing him and Peggy to travel all over Europe. He moved to Loral following its purchase of IBM’s Federal Systems Division and ended his career at Lockheed Martin, where he worked until retiring in 2000. Ed loved to host friends and family whether in their long-time home in Maryland or in Paris, where they lived for five years. Having been a tour guide in Washington, DC, during college, he could not wait to bring out of town guests on a nighttime tour of the monuments. His other interests included gardening, golf, flowers, bridge, travel, and he couldn’t pass up a parade. He was known for his generosity and desire to help others. Ed and Peggy were founding members of Mill Creek Parish in Derwood, MD. They worked with the teen group, volunteered for the soup kitchen, served on committees, and Ed accompanied the childrens’ choir on piano. Since Ed’s move to Richmond, VA, he has been a member of Bon Air Baptist Church, a congregation that warmly welcomed him into their fold and to whom we are very appreciative. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of his wife, Read to Them, for which he volunteered at local elementary schools in support of One Richmond, One Book, or a charity of your choice.
