

HALL, J. Curtis, 91, of Richmond and Pensacola, Florida, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; son, Michael Hall (Bonnie) of Richmond; daughter, Suzanne Beisner (John) of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Lindsay Condrey (Matt), Adam Hall (Stephanie), Brittany and Brooke Beisner; three step grandchildren, Caroline Sullivan, Shayla and Owen Ides; and one great-granddaughter, Mila Condrey; brother, A. Lee Hall (Lucy) of North Carolina; and sister, Rubydelle Heller of Richmond.
Dr. Hall served for 26 years as Dean of the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University. He stepped down as Dean in 1988 and served as University Professor until his retirement. Immediately upon his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Navy's Flight Training Program and served on active duty until 1946. He remained active in the Navy Reserve until his retirement in 1986 at the rank of Commander. He graduated magna cum laude from Duke University, where he was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He received his master's degree from Virginia Tech and his doctorate from Columbia University.
During his long career in higher education, he also taught at Virginia Tech, Auburn University, served as visiting professor at Columbia University, the University of Colorado, the University of Hawaii, the University of Minnesota, and Oregon State University. He co-authored four textbooks and more than 50 articles in a variety of professional journals and yearbooks. He also spoke on business and economic topics in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Hall founded the Virginia Council on Economic Education and continued to serve on its board of directors until his death. The board established the J. Curtis Hall Award, which is given each year to an outstanding supporter of economic education in Virginia. VCEE named their suite in the School of Business Building at VCU the J. Curtis Hall suite in his honor. Throughout his career he was active in numerous local, regional, and professional associations serving as president of VBEA, SBEA, NBEA, and SBAA. In 1983, he became the 31st recipient of the John Robert Gregg Award, which is presented each year to an individual who has been recognized for an outstanding life-time contribution to the advancement of business education in the U.S.
He continued his enjoyment of traveling the world into his retirement years and especially enjoyed spending time at their home in Florida. Above all, however, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
The family will receive friends at the Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 2 to 3 p.m. and a memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Council of Economic Education at 301 W.
