

Jack Andrew Olsen, 70, of Midlothian, Virginia passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 30, 2017. He leaves his wife Susan; daughter Gretchen Bassett (Phil); son Christopher Olsen (Kellie); daughter Danielle Razak; son Andrew Olsen; grandchildren Adam and Mitch Olsen, Julia and Joshua Bassett and Mila Razak; brother Jeffrey Olsen (Rose); sisters Barbara Schacht (Ken); Marcia Ohren (Michael); Stephanie Olsen (Tom); and Stacy Panneck (Jeff); and mother in law Muriel Labbate; and many other family members and close friends. Mr. Olsen was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Bette Olsen and father in law Joseph Labbate.
Born February 8, 1947 in Washington D.C., he spent his early years in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Iowa. After graduating from Forest City High School, Iowa in 1965, he attended Waldorf University for two years and graduated from Texas Lutheran University in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in Education. After serving in the U.S. Army, in 1973 Mr. Olsen began is 34 year career as a high school government teacher at Midlothian High School, Midlothian, Virginia. For 37 years, he coached several sports at Midlothian including football, baseball, basketball, and golf.
He lived his passion of teaching and coaching. Mr. Olsen was a major influence in the lives of hundreds of students in his years as an educator, and valued honesty, integrity and hard work above all else. A gifted athlete, he could get children to do things physically they didn’t even know they could do. He showed them how great they could be.
A true family man, Mr. Olsen played a big role in his children and grandchildren’s lives, never missing a school performance or sporting event. When not playing ball, he could be found surrounded by his family and close friends, sharing his knowledge of sports and talking politics.
An avid golfer, Mr. Olsen spent his retired years as an active member of the Country Club at The Highlands, playing with the coaches’ group and representing the club in many tournaments. Mr. Olsen will be missed by many but will live on as an “angel in the outfield.”
The Family will receive friends Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home 1020 Huguenot Road from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 pm,
and where a Celebration of his Life will be held Saturday May 6, 2017 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Massey Cancer Center.
