Jean Sellars Hamlett

Jean Harper Sellars Hamlett, 95, of Richmond, died on January 15, 2023. She was born in Richmond, VA on December 15, 1927 to Charles Bruce Harper and Mae Ryland Harper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two loving husbands, Allen Sellars and Carson Hamlett Jr.; her brother, Charles B. Harper Jr.; and her four sisters: Mildred Harper, Bruce Heisler, Frances Harper, and Sue Schumann. She is survived by her children: Bruce Sellars (Susanne) of Roanoke, VA; Nancy Hughart (Randy) of Greensboro, NC; Sarah Barbour (Mark) of Kingsport, TN; seven grandchildren: Samantha Leigh Ehlers, Ben Sellars, Kelsey Houston (Tommy), Will Barbour, Coleman Fairburn (Emma), Owen Barbour (Samantha), and Sam Barbour; and great- grandchildren: Anna Ehlers and Grace Houston. Jean graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Westhampton College. After her marriage to Allen Sellars, they lived in Fayetteville, AR, Charleston, WV, and Roanoke, VA, returning to Richmond in 1976. Jean led a very active life. She was a member of Bon Air Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and circle coordinator. She was an active member of the Commonwealth Chapter of NSDAR, a member of the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club, and a volunteer for many years at the Richmond Home for Ladies (Covenant Woods). She loved to do handwork, including smocking and sewing clothes for her family. Her other favorite things to do were shopping, working in her flower garden, taking water aerobic classes, and spending time at the beach with family. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Friday, January 20 at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 W Huguenot Rd, Richmond, VA 23235. Interment will follow at 1pm at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Ln, Richmond, VA 23222. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at Lakewood Retirement Community. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bon Air Presbyterian Church.
