BRUSH, John Joseph "Jack," MD, age 68, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from a recurrence of lymphoma. He was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Virginia Brush; and survived by siblings, Robert Brush Jr., David Brush, Sister Mary Elizabeth Brush and Dolores Moffatt. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Judy; his children, Jack Jr., Jeannie Cziesla (Chris), and Billy (Vicki); grandchildren, Elise and Brynn Cziesla; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Dr. Brush grew up in Ambridge, Pa., completed undergraduate studies at Marquette University and received his medical degree from Marquette University School of Medicine (1970) in Milwaukee, Wis. His internship was at Milwaukee County General Hospital (1971). He served with the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Va. (1971 to 1974) and was honorably discharged as Commander. He completed his Residency in Neurology at Medical College of Virginia (1977), and remained on staff at MCV Hospitals until 1981. Then Dr. Brush joined Neurological Associates, where he continued to practice until June 2013. He was a lifelong member of the Virginia Neurological Society, the Richmond Academy of Medicine and the Medical Society of Virginia.
Despite his arduous work schedule, Dr. Brush was able to enjoy golf, belonged to the Bogies, and achieved three holes-in-one in his golfing career. His medical achievements, however, defined his true character. His compassion, graciousness and brilliant mind served thousands of people over the years. His patients were devoted to him and his colleagues and co-workers greatly admired and loved him.
While his exacting work ethic dominated his life, he was a loving and adored husband, father, grandfather and friend and brought warmth and humor to all who knew him. It was important to Jack to make others feel that they were special and valued, and all who knew him felt his loving attention. He will be missed beyond words but his presence will remain forever in our hearts. Please remember Jack with a smile and the knowledge that his time on earth was well spent and appreciated. The Brush Family would like to extend their gratitude for the excellent care of Jack during his hospitalizations at Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals, and for the continued support by Neurological Associates.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 27, at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, from 3 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 28, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Rd., Richmond.
