Glen and I just learned of John’s death and many fond memories of knowing both you and John when we were with SIU School of Medicine came flowing forth.  Please know we are thinking of you and send our love and deepest sympathy.

Dear Mrs. Texter and family,

My name is Doug Barringer and I live on Old Salem Lane just west of Springfield, Illinois.  Years ago I had the great, great pleasure to play tennis with John when you lived just down the road from my boyhood home.  If you recall, my family was fortunate  to have a tennis court in our backyard.  We played with Judge Jim Craven and his son Don.  It was always John and the Judge against Don and I.  John and Judge were senior to Don and I by about 20 years, but it always seemed Don and I did all the running around on the court while your husband and Judge never moved and were victorious most of the time.  Those were beautiful memories that I will always cherish.  I may have lost touch with you and John over the years, but I never stopped thinking about you both and wishing you well.

I am sorry to hear of John’s death.  I considered him a great teacher and good friend.  He arrived at MCV’s department of Urology the same year I started as a 1st year Urology Resident.  He was a welcome addition to  what was already an impressive  faculty.  We residents got the benefit of Dr. Texter’s teaching  until  he left MCV to become Chairman of the Diepartment of Urology at Southern Illinois Medical School.  We have kept in contact over the years at meetings and skiing trips and by phone.   I will miss him and his sense of humor.  He was a good man.  My sympathy to Joy.

John was one of the finest and most talented physicians I have met. More importantly he was one of the finest people. Intelligent and caring, he was a great mentor, instructor and friend. 

One of the most outstanding physicians I have known.  He provided the best care for his patients and provided an outstanding educational environment for the residents.  He had a great sense of humor, especially his limericks.  

I am so sorry to learn about John’s passing. I always felt a special bond with him as he and I began our time at the Urology Department at MCV on the same weekend in July of 1971. He was a new  attending  and I a newly minted 3rd year medical student starting as a Urology Extern.   Over the next 7 years until I completed my Urology Residency in 1978, I valued his knowledge, surgical skills and friendship.   I was a better urologist because of him.  My sincere condolences go to his lovely wife Joy and his children. Rest In Peace my friend! 🙏

 John was a wonderful person and an outstanding mentor. He had a great sense of humor and was a great story teller. 
 He will be missed.

An amazing person and a true role model in every part of his life. 
He was an inspiration to me and many others forging our way into the field of Urology.   He had a great sense of humor and was held in highest esteem both by patients and colleagues. 

He will be missed and remembered often as one of the greatest of all time.

He was also predeceased by his brother, Russell Texter, of Sharon, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, Joy T. Texter; his daughter, Rebecca Texter Arlauskas, her husband, Joseph and their son, Seth; his son, John Henry Texter III, his wife, Lori and their children, Zeke, Emma and Eli; his niece, Anna Kanter, her husband, Jonathan and their daughter, Miriam; his nephew, Benjamin Turpin; and two special doggies, Max and Mandy.
