

Ruby Carter Adams Scruggs, 94, of Richmond, Va., passed away on April 24, 2013 at Hospice of Virginia, Retreat Hospital. Ruby was born in Piney Fork, Va., near Gretna, a community of Pittsylvania County. She was a 1938 graduate of Averett College in Danville, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, W.A. "Bill" Scruggs; and her two sisters, Doris A. Marilla and Fleetwood A. Cocke. Ruby was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Richmond and loved to sing in the Joy Singers choir. She was a wonderful, dedicated and loving wife and mother. She is survived by her two children, Sharon C. Rice and her husband, Wayne, of Danville, Calif., and W.A. "Andy" Scruggs Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Chesterfield, Va.; five grandchildren, Donnie Torres and husband, Rich, of Shorewood, Minn., Trevor Rice and girlfriend, Sarah, of Danville, Calif., Seth Scruggs and wife, Carrie, of Charlotte, N.C., Nathan Scruggs and wife, Lisa, of Powhatan, Va., and Brandi Shumaker and husband, Blake, of Chesterfield, Va.; eight great-grandchildren, Carter and Francesca Torres, Sammy, Owen and Drew Scruggs, David Scruggs, and Hunter and Addison Shumaker. She is also survived by several very dear nieces and one nephew. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, April 29, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at First Baptist Church. Interment later that day at 3 p.m. at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.
