Stella Seales was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on November 23, 1933, to Francis Adolphus Seales and Imelda Oliver. Through much of her childhood, Stella was cared for by her paternal grandmother Lyle Elizabeth Seales (“Granny”) and her paternal aunt, Estelita Isaacs.
As a young woman, Stella attended St. Vincent and the Grenadines school of Nursing. Upon graduating, she served as a midwife and district nurse at local clinic in the villages of Chateaubelair and Belair.
Seeking a better life for herself and her family, Stella emigrated to the United States (Brooklyn, NY) in 1960. There, she successfully completed the training requirements to obtain her Registered Nurse certification.
While working and raising her daughter, Stella continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Science from St. Joseph’s College in 1977. Throughout her nursing career, Stella applied her skills to a range of areas including Public Health nursing, newborn nursery, medical & surgical units, as well as serving as an Operating Room supervisor. She continued her work as a Registered Nurse until her retirement at the age of 62 after 40 years in the medical field.
For the last 41 years, Stella was known to many as Nana, the name she chose to be called by her grandchildren. As a grandmother, Stella was devoted, tireless, protective and doting. She played an invaluable role raising her four grandchildren, each of whom viewed her as a beloved third parental figure.
In her final years, Stella faced health challenges that hindered her memory but did not dim her personality or loving heart. She passed away quietly at Johnston-Willis Hospital on August 26, 2025, at the age of 91, surrounded by adoring family members whose lives she immeasurably shaped.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Michelle Henry (Brian) four grandchildren, Gillian Point Du Jour (James) Nicole Henry, Michael Henry, David Henry and one great grandchild, Israel Henry. Her memory is also cherished by her siblings, Joy Sherwood Leslie Dorsinville, Patricia Dash, Lennox Seales, Grace Lewis, Basil Seales, Dawn Rodriguez, Claudeth James, Bridget Toney, Rohan Seales, Hazel Mitchell, Jeffrey Seales, Kenrick Seales, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, notably Allison Benjamin, Lenore Lewis and June Mascoll and best friend, Verna Welshman. Special thanks to her devoted caregiver of three years, Kathy Owens.
She was predeceased by siblings Ewert King, Franklyn Seales, Adolphus Seales and Junior Seales.
Stella is deeply missed but her memory will continue to serve as a source of inspiration and warmth to those who love her.
