

Lt. Col Thomas Bernard Whalen, 91, of Lakewood Manor went home to be with the Lord on June 18, 2017. He was born on November 6, 1925 in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of William and Mary Whalen. He is predeceased by Ada Christine Markham Whalen, wife of 69 years.
Tom was a member of Bon Air Baptist Church and an active member of the men's prayer group.
He served his country in three wars: World War II, Korean, and Vietnam. He received two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat during the Battle of the Bulge and the Remagen Bridgehead in Germany. Tom was honored with a total of 37 service medals. Tom served at the Pentagon as Director of Finance and Comptroller Automated System Development from 1972 to 1978. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 35 years of service. In 1980 he received in MS in taxation from Southwestern University in Washington, DC and continued his own accounting business until present. November 11, 2004 he was awarded the Congressional Veteran Commendation during the Veterans Day Ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia.
Tom leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends to cherish his memory.
Prior to the memorial service his remains will rest at Woody’s Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel from 10:00 – 12:00 on July 6. Huguenot Chapel is located at 1020 Huguenot Road, Midliothian, Virginia 23113. The memorial service will be on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 1:00 at Bon Air Baptist Church, 2531 Buford Road, Richmond, Virginia 23235. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation in memory of Tom Whalen should be made to the church mission or veterans organization of your choice.
The family will receive friends at a reception in the Bon Air Baptist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the memorial service.
