

NELSON, William Earl, 94, died Monday, February 4, 2013. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marion. He is survived by his sister, Jane Rath of California; two daughters, Sandy Nelson Stegner and her husband, Jim; Beth Nelson and her husband, Gary Ryczek; two grandchildren, Kristin Scales and her husband, Chris; Eric Stegner and his wife, Colleen; and three great grandchildren, Eric, Jalyn and Thomas. Mr. Nelson was a resident at the Brandermill Woods Retirement Community since 2004. Born in Chicago, Mr. Nelson was a resident of Illinois until retiring to North Carolina, living in Chapel Hill and Pinehurst before moving to Midlothian. Mr. Nelson served in the United States Army, originally as a member of the horse cavalry. He fought in Europe as an anti-aircraft artillery operations officer during World War II. Mr. Nelson owned Nelson Lumber Company in Gurnee, Illinois. He earned a doctorate degree from Northern Illinois University and was Dean of Counseling at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. Mr. Nelson enjoyed golf, skiing and boating for many years. “Bill” was known for his colorful golf sweaters, his sense of humor and his love of life.
