

William Paul Sharkey, age 87, died on 6/29/2024. A longtime resident of Midlothian, VA with his wife Mona O’Neill Sharkey and two children. He is survived by his son, Bill Jr., sister, Kathleen Sharkey and brother Francis. He is preceded in death by daughter, Joanna Grace; sister, Lorena Turner, and his parents Dr. William F. Sharkey and Elvy Hyllen Sharkey.
Born in Queens, NY and raised during the WWII years by his two favorite aunts, Grace and Lilly, he and his sister were reunited after the war with their parents in Whitestone, NY. His education included Brooklyn Prep and Admiral Farragut Academy.
He received a BA in Geography from Bucknell University and MA in Transportation from Columbia University. Following college graduation, he reported for training with the famous 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY. Took his new skills to Vietnam and eventually Turkey.
Married to Mona O’Neill Sharkey for 59 years, also a fellow classmate from Bucknell. They met up at their 5th year class reunion in 1964 and were married a year later in June 1965.
His business career took him to the trucking industry as well as supermarkets Grand Union in New York and Acme Markets in Philadelphia. He particularly loved his last job as VP of Transportation for Richfood which became Supervalu. Living in Virginia full time was great.
Finally, Bill at the end of his life, recently celebrated over 53 years in recovery with fellow friends of Bill Wilson. Changed his life forever.
Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, August 21st at 1:30 p.m., Roman Catholic Church of the Epiphany, North Chesterfield, with reception to follow in the commons.
