Andy Walkingshaw, fondly known as "Bear" was born on March 22, 1971, in SLC, UT. A big bear of a man with an even bigger heart was on the vacation of a lifetime in Hawaii with his sweetheart of 25 years, Mindy Walkingshaw, when that big heart beat for the last time on June 29, 2014. His lungs, scarred from radiation therapy he received as a teenager for Hodgkin's lymphoma just couldn't do their job anymore. As much as we hate that fact, we are forever grateful for the 43 years he was with us.
Andy grew up in the shadow of the Wasatch Mountains. A childhood filled with fishing at the lake, dirt bike riding, and camping with his family, Andy learned at a young age to love the outdoors. His family will never forget his rendition of My Ding-a-ling, a standard at all family gatherings. His talent for playing the guitar made even that little ditty something to remember. In high school he met the love of his life, Mindy (Miller) Walkingshaw, their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Their four children Katie (Marchal) Eardley, Jake, Missy, and Rachel will attest to the fact that a better father and grandpa can’t be found. His two grandbabies, Porter and Cole Eardley both sport their grandpa’s twinkling blue eyes.
Andy was a man who knew how to do everything- from restarting a car to restarting a heart. He was everyone’s handy man. Whether your furnace needed fixing or your child just fell off their bike he was there lending a hand. His selflessness made his work as a Captain for the Murray City Fire Department and a medic at South Davis Community Hospital a natural fit.
Our hope is that everyone who loved and cared for Andy takes the time, a moment, a day, a week, to try to live life with his charity, his compassion, and his boundless joy.
Andy is survived by and will be missed by his family; his wife Mindy (Miller) Walkingshaw, Children Katie (Marchal) Eardley, Jake, Missy and Rachel, grandchildren, Porter and Cole Eardley, mother Sandy (Paul) Krueger, father Gail (Carole) Walkingshaw, brother Nole (Miriam) Walkingshaw, step brothers David (Kim) Gertz, and Jon (Brandy) Gertz, step sisters Chantel Wiegmann, Amber Krueger, and Eva Curnow. His two cousins that were like brothers Chris (Danielle) Sjoblom and Nate (Sarah) Walkingshaw. In-laws, Ken (Ginni) Miller, Jennifer (Jay) Matero, K.C. Miller, Jeremy (Angie) Miller. Step grandparents Ralph (Barbara) Krueger. Preceded in death by grandparents Mabel and Ray Walkingshaw and Marvin and Dorothy Sorensen.
