Charles “Allan” Wilson returned to his Heavenly Father on September 20, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born November 2, 1944, in the Jones Maternity Home in Rupert, Idaho, to Charles Murwin Wilson and Dorcas Janette Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet; his sister, Diane Ellis; his brothers, Kenneth S. and Robert L.; and his daughter, Michele Diane Cunningham (Barry).
Allan is survived by two daughters, Margo A. Lybbert (Rick) and Meg E. Cunningham (Jeremy); eight grandchildren, Janessa Cunningham, Spencer Cunningham, Lindsie Sullivan (Hadlee), Troy Lybbert, Mallory Lybbert, Cameron Cunningham, Mackenzie Cunningham, and Cade Cunningham; and two great-grandchildren, Maverick Sullivan and Saylor Sullivan.
Allan served an LDS Spanish-speaking mission in the Central American Mission headquartered in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In addition to Guatemala, he served in El Salvador and Nicaragua. He loved the people, and they loved him. He stayed in contact with those he baptized and other friends he made there throughout his life.
After returning from his mission, Allan continued his studies at Brigham Young University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and English and obtained a Utah State teaching certificate. More importantly, he met his eternal companion, Janet Lennox Murdoch, whom he had noticed walking across campus the year before his mission but had not met. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on July 12, 1968. After finishing their education, they returned to Salt Lake City to live on her family’s property, where they later built their own home.
Allan taught Spanish and boys’ health at Central Junior High and taught Spanish for BYU Extension in Salt Lake for several years. He was then hired by the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk working on the new letter-sorting machines. Over time, he advanced from clerk to Manager of Training and later served as Human Resources Manager and Injury Compensation Specialist in the Personnel Office. He was selected to go to USPS Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to help develop training courses for Managers of Training and traveled throughout the United States teaching those courses. Following his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, Allan spent several years working for Thatcher Chemical Corporation before retiring again in 2008.
A devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, Allan faithfully served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These included High Priest Group Leader, Stake Executive Secretary, and Counselor in the Bishopric. His favorite calling was home teacher, where he loved visiting neighbors and friends from his ward with his dear wife.
When Allan wasn’t working, you could find him in his yard planting beautiful flowers or mowing his beloved lawn. His perennial garden was his pride and joy. He had a definite green thumb, and gardening was his stress relief. He enjoyed building many features to beautify his yard, including two river-rock bridges crossing the stream that ran through it. Allan was especially proud of the rock wall and arch he built from the same river rock. In rare spare moments, he enjoyed fishing, though not as often as he wished. Music was another of his passions: he had a wonderful singing voice and frequently played the piano. Allan truly was one of a kind—a genuine, caring soul. He tirelessly cared for his wife during the last two and a half years of her life while she was confined to her bed. A friend to everyone, Allan had a gift for making people feel as though they had known him for years. His laughter was contagious, and his sense of humor unmatched. One of his favorite things was sharing a good laugh with his daughters.
Funeral services for Allan will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cottonwood 5th Ward Chapel, 5913 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah, and again at the chapel on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
