David Coombs was the son of Ernest Elden and Louise Ellertson Coombs, and the husband of Geraldine (Gerri) Tolman Coombs. Dave and Gerri were married in 1966. David recently passed away from cancer after living life to the fullest for 79 years. He graduated from Highland High School and the University of Utah with two bachelors degrees one in Psychology and the other in Accounting. Later in his career David was trained by IBM to be a computer programmer. He worked as a staff accountant, credit manager, controller, data processing manager, and programmer/analyst.
David was a renaissance man. He had multiple talents and interests in the following areas: Tropical fish and their upkeep, model trains, visual art, music, plants, and cultures and religions. He collected and read many books and magazines on those subjects. He was a talented pianist and artist. He studied the classical piano for 12 years, beginning at an early age. Later he learned to play jazz piano. Dave taught himself to play the classical guitar. He took art lessons in his teenage years. Dave worked in pencil, pen, pastels, and oils. He was a loving, kind, and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dave enjoyed hiking in the mountains, especially in the canyons east of Salt Lake City. He traveled to many nearby National Parks with his wife and children where he enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Dave and Gerri enjoyed many trips together. He served in many positions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including as a stake missionary, Sunday School President, in the ward and the stake; teacher in Sunday School, Young Men, and Priesthood; ward activities leader, stake cultural arts director. He was a Cub Master. He served as a museum educator/docent at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts for 6 years, and then was an emeritus docent.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine K. T. Coombs and four children: Joy Blanscett (Scott), Holly Tippetts (Brad), Jonathan Coombs (Emily), and Elizabeth Olson (Jeff), brother, Douglas Coombs, 19 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren, with 2 more expected in September, and 4 Coombs’ nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dick E. Coombs.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 17th for family and close friends. A non-traditional viewing, where those interested may watch a video of David’s life, will take place before and after his funeral at the church. Mask wearing is expected. A zoom link is available on request. David will be buried in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park with military honors, having served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Donations in David’s honor may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Fund or to the UMFA Anne K. Stewart Docent Conservation Fund.
