Dee Ann Sumner, age 88, passed away peacefully in her home in Millcreek, Utah, on Monday, February 9, 2026. She was born on October 19, 1937, in Provo, Utah, to parents Elton James and Nedra Prince Sumner, the first of five children.
Dee served an LDS mission in France and Belgium and loved serving the people there. She attended BYU and the University of Utah, receiving her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She taught for many years at the Riley and Franklin Elementary Schools in Salt Lake City. She later received her master’s degree in library science and, in that capacity, enjoyed enriching the lives of the students she taught.
She was a talented singer and loved sketching, painting, cooking, sewing, and working on crafts. She loved to read and shared that love with all who knew her. She loved watching game shows, movies, the NFL, and the Olympics. She had a special place in her heart for all animals and rescued many cats and dogs throughout her life.
Dee was preceded in death by her parents, Elton James and Nedra Prince Sumner; her brother, Sterling Elton Sumner; and two nephews. Dee is survived by her brother, James Franklin Sumner; her sisters, N. Colleen (Sumner) Mohr and Mary (Sumner) Stansfield (Michael); and twenty nieces and nephews.
She will always be remembered for her fun personality and sense of humor, as well as her genuine kindness, caring, and thoughtfulness toward everyone she associated with, especially her family and friends. She was always in the service of others.
We want to thank Hospice for Utah nurses Jamie and Sara, and Dr. Heath for providing such exceptional care.
There will be graveside services to honor Dee on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11:00 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
