

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, Don J. Smith, age 84, passed away surrounded by his loving family on August 30, 2013 in Murray, Utah. Don was born on September 22, 1928 to Edith and Lorin LeRoy Smith in Smithfield, Utah. Don graduated from East High School. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served as Elders Quorum President, Counselor in the Bishopric, High Councilman and Choir Director. He completed a LDS Mission in Hawaii and then went on to serve his country in the Army. He attended the University of Utah and graduated from Brigham Young University. He met his sweetheart Shanna Lee Stewart and was married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 27, 1955. Together they had seven children. Don worked as a County Auditor, a Professor of Business Math at the Salt Lake Community College and also as a Salt Lake County Constable for over 50 years. Don loved his family and enjoyed spending vacations and time with them. He loved snowmobiling at his cabin, boating on Lake Powell, riding four wheelers, fishing the streams, camping, hiking and hunting in the mountains. Don also loved the scouting program and was a scout leader for many years. Don will be remembered for his love of family and sense of humor. If you met Don he probably asked you, “How’s your liver?” and then talked about his family.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Norma Lynn Butts, son David J. Smith and son-in-law J.D. Poulsen. He is survived by his wife Shanna Lee Smith and 6 children; Catherine Johanson, Steven (Lori) Smith, Craig (Norma) Smith, Sharon Poulsen, Gary (Myndi) Smith, Amy (Tim) Hale, daughter-in-law Jennifer Smith, sister Colleen Cohne, brother Robert (Kay) Smith and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Midvale East 4th Ward Chapel, 87 East 7100 South, Midvale, Utah. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the Chapel and one hour prior to the funeral. The Interment will follow at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
