Born in Salt Lake City to Nina Richards and F Orin Woodbury on June 14, 1919, Dorothy was the oldest of their four children. She attended Salt Lake City schools. Every year she was an honor student and student body officer. At the University of Utah, she was a member of the Tri Delta Mortar Board and other honorariums, and she was elected Vice President of the student body. She transferred and graduated from the University of Southern California in 1940, where she met her husband, William “Bill” Francis Macrate. After Bill returned from four years of active sea duty in World War II, they made their home in Long Beach, California, where they raised their three daughters Mindi, Carli, and Molly.
Dorothy was an active volunteer serving as Chairman of Long Beach Children’s Theater, Junior Programs, and Rick Rackers, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Long Beach. She had the rare privilege at the time of earning her private pilot’s license. She enjoyed most sports, loved watching football, and played golf regularly from her teen years into her nineties at Salt Lake Country Club, Virginia Country Club of Long Beach, and La Quinta Country Club in the Palm Springs area. She traveled with her husband, an avid deep-sea fisherman, as he caught big fish in oceans around the world. They spent many summer weekends on their boats, Zoa and the Gold Button, at the Yacht Club mooring in Long Beach and the Tuna Club in Avalon on Catalina Island. Dorothy also enjoyed playing bridge regularly with a variety of ladies groups. When Bill passed away after 55 years of marriage, she divided her time between her homes in Long Beach, California, and Salt Lake City, Utah. She continued to travel the world with her family into her late 90’s.
Of all her accomplishments, Dorothy would say her greatest was her family. She took great pride in the special relationships she had with every member of her family that included three generations. She is survived by two of her three daughters and a son in law: Mindi Barbee, Carli & Bill Steers; 10 grandchildren: Samantha Barbee, Nicole & Steven Swearer, Melida Barbee, Bill & Stephanie Barbee, Maren & Pedro Urquilla, Andrea and Don Goodman, Serena Steers and Geoff Boucher, Pamela Mudge, Tom & Janette Mudge and Sam Mudge; 12 great grandchildren: Madeleine Swearer, Lily Swearer, Gavin Barbee, Emmett Barbee and Rhys Barbee, Solana Urquilla, Malena Urquilla, Eva Urquilla, Jaxson Goodman, William Mudge, Ashtyn Mudge, Thomas Mudge Jr, not to mention the numerous members of her extended family.
At her request, there will be no funeral but her immediate family will gather from throughout the world for a memorial reunion.
