After living a wonderful, adventurous, Christlike life, Doug passed away early Friday morning surrounded by his loving family.
He fought a brave battle with cancer, which ultimately was the cause of his death.
Doug was the father of five beautiful daughters with his loving and eternal wife of 53 years, Myra Lee Smith. Both Doug and Myra were born and raised in Grantsville, Utah and knew each other almost their entire lives. Doug was the Student Body President at Grantsville High School where he graduated as co-valedictorian in 1963.
After high school, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Central States mission from 1964-66. Throughout his life, Doug served faithfully in church callings and assignments, from home teacher to High Councilor—much of the time, as a financial clerk. Most recently, he served as a Primary teacher. Doug was a dedicated disciple of Christ who was always serving God by serving others.
Upon return from his mission, Doug enrolled at BYU, beginning his studies in electrical engineering before switching to the accounting program, from which he would earn an accounting degree.
Doug worked for the Corporation of the Presiding Bishopric (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) for 36 years and prepared taxes for 30 years. He served on the Supervisory Committee and Board of Directors of Granite Credit Union for over 30 years.
His financial work for the church and with the credit union gave Doug unique opportunities to experience many wonderful people, places and cultures. From 1971-74, he took an assignment to be a financial representative for the church in Hamilton, New Zealand where he worked closely with church construction in the South Pacific. While fulfilling his assignment abroad, Doug traveled throughout Australia and New Zealand. It was during this time of life that he caught the travel bug and developed his passion for globetrotting.
If you were to spin a globe and point, chances are good that Doug has been there. Internationally, his travels took him from Japan to Singapore to the Philippines, to Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Germany and the UK. Closer to home, Doug traveled to Canada, Mexico, the Virgin Islands, and throughout the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii.
Whether on the road in some historic hamlet, or at home on Evergreen Lane, he relished spending time and making memories with his family. Some of his favorite memories included cheering on his Cougars in ball games, working on puzzles, watching old comedy classics (usually starring Don Knotts or Tim Conway) and playing card games, trains, dolls or Legos with his grandkids. Nothing was more important to Doug than his family. Through his unwavering support, constant service and incredible generosity, he made each member of his family feel deeply loved, cared for and appreciated. They are all eternally grateful for that love and his wonderful example.
He is survived by his sweetheart Myra, daughters Jana (Jeff) Standiford, Joanna (Ryan) Monson, Jennifer (Richard) Black, Jodi (Thomas) Ammon, and Jami; grandchildren Michael (Maryanne), Cortland (Holly), Megan, and Ty Standiford, Jane and Kate Monson, Genevieve, Eliza, Tabetha, and Adrienne Black, Joseph and Andrew Ammon; great-granddaughter Baylee Standiford.
