He met Marilyn at his father’s bakery where she worked as a young girl. Their eyes met and it was a beautiful love story for the next 76 years. They were married on January 17, 1947 and from then on he always referred to her and introduced her as “his bride”. They were very young parents to their six children and it seemed like they all grew up together.
He loved boats and had many. From the ‘Beetle Cat’ sailboat we sailed on the Great Salt Lake to the ‘Tollycraft’ on Lake Powell and last to the ‘Glastron’ and the ‘Bertram’ he fished from in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico.
He had a love for classic and rare cars and we all learned to love and appreciate them as well. Living in Kansas, Dad drove a beautiful 1940 Lincoln Continental Convertible and he reminded us often how lucky we were to be riding around in such a beautiful and rare car. It was one of fifty and might have been the only one in the state at that time. He drove many corvettes and his MGTF was another beautiful rare red roadster he loved driving. A 1957 Jaguar XK140 was one of many other cherished favorites.
Doug loved traveling, he and Marilyn spent many winters in Mexico, always near the ocean; fishing, shelling, and spending time with good friends. Before retiring, when they could get away he would say “call Howard, make reservations,” (Howard Johnson) and they’d be off to the Pacific Coast somewhere. They had several motorhomes and trailers and had many memorable road trips.
Dad owned and operated BuyRyte market for many years where all of his kids had a job when it was wanted or needed. Many life lessons were learned there.
A voracious reader, he loved non-fiction, scientific magazines, current events, and everything factual. He was brilliant, full of knowledge about so much. There was never a conversation with him that we didn’t learn something new.
He treasured music of all kinds. Classic tunes from the 30’s and 40’s, opera, musicals from the 50’s and 60’s. He knew them well and sung them often.
He was our rock and our world will miss him beyond measure.
Surviving relatives are his loving wife Marilyn, his children: Lawny Hunt (Don), Lorraine Reynolds, Douglas M. Reynolds, Priscilla Mann (Gary), and Amy Reynolds, eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Broderick, sister, Kathryn Patterson, and brother Reed Reynolds.
