

Fern Morgan Ockey, age 93, died early on the morning of January 5, 2015 in Midvale, Utah, surrounded by family members. She was born October 14, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Grant Morgan and Amy LaPearl Lewis Morgan. She was the second of four children, joining her older sister Donna and followed by her brother Derrell (Cass) and sister Barbara (Babs). She married her "doughboy," Blaine Ockey, on May 23, 1942 (later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS temple). After his return from overseas service in WWII, they made their home in Salt Lake City, where their three children, Gary, Randl, and Robyn, were born. From there they moved to Minneapolis, Chicago, New Jersey, and then back to Salt Lake City in 1972. During their retirement years they enjoyed many wonderful times with their friends at Brookstone condominiums. Fern has been a resident of Canyon Creek Assisted Living Center since August of 2007.Fern was always gracious and concerned about people. She was happiest when she was helping others, whether it was being with grandkids, taking in food, or just visiting. While in Chicago she had a beauty shop in her basement where she made the world more beautiful one hairdo at a time. She also loved their cabin at Big Trees, flowers, nature, animals, and volunteering at the library and St. Mark's Hospital. Gardening was a special pleasure for her and she spent many hours in her enviable gardens. She reveled in simple pleasures, from the smallest gift to a walk in the woods. Fern loved all things family. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Blaine, her sister Donna, and her brother Derrell. She is survived by her sister Barbara Prouse (Dick) and her three children-Gary Ockey (Annie Zeidmann), Randl Ockey (Catherine Wheelwright), and Robyn Ockey Foulger (Allen Foulger). Also surviving are her nine grandchildren - Mark Ockey (Jennifer), Jeanine Ockey-Webb (Gary), Sharon Beecroft (Eric), Becca Harris (Mike), Jennifer Roskelley (Jeremy), Jeffrey Steadman (Emily), Richard Steadman (Celeina), Greg Steadman (Amy), and Scott Steadman (Lauren) - twenty great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.The memorial service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive (SLC), with visitation at the same location on Friday, January 9, from 6:00-8:00 pm and again on Saturday an hour before the service. Internment at Wasatch Lawn will follow the service.Donations may be made in Fern's honor to the charity of your choice . The family would like to thank the many people who provided gentle loving care to Fern the past seven years.
