Floyd Raymond Bekins, Jr., passed away on Saturday September 25, 2021 at the age of 98. Born December 5, 1922 to Floyd Bekins and Dorothy Barton Bekins in Fresno, California. In his early life he was called Buddy by his family. At age 7 his family moved to the Los Angeles area.
He attended Black Foxe military academy in Hollywood California for his high school career, then went on to enroll at Stanford University in 1940. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the US Army during World War II and served as an intelligence clerk in the Americal Division. He served in the South Pacific areas of New Caledonia, Fiji,the Solomons Islands, Leyte,and Cebu in the Philippines. He later was injured and given an honorable discharge. He received the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal with two bronze battle stars and the Bronze Arrowhead. He returned home and later completed his studies at Stanford.
After college he began working for the Bekins Moving and Storage company that his grandfather had founded in 1891. He worked in San Diego, California in 1950 and later transferred to the San Francisco warehouse on Geary Blvd. Later in his career he relocated back to Los Angeles and eventually became a member of the board of directors of the Bekins company until the company was sold in 1983.
Floyd married Virginia Lou Pawling in 1951 and had two daughters, Amy Teresa Lynn and Heidi Elizabeth Bekins. Floyd and Virginia separated and in 1959 he married Janet McInerny and had a daughter with her named Ramona. Floyd and Janet later separated.
In 1975 Floyd married Jeanne Frazier. Floyd adopted her two children, Eric and Shelly. In 1975 Floyd was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was an active member of the church the remainder of his life.
Floyd was a talented piano player and singer. He composed many original songs. He participated in many different choirs and musical ensembles throughout his life. He spoke fluent Spanish and served many Spanish speaking people in the church and in the community. He was a founder of Haven House in Pasadena, California, a private shelter for abused women and children. He also served in advisory positions in various anonymous fellowship groups.
Floyd is survived by his sister Katherine, his wife Jeanne, his daughters Amy, Heidi and Ramona, as well as his adopted children Eric and Shelly, and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
