“Grandpa George – a Family Man”
April 29, 1924 – November 20, 2015
George William Glaittli 91, passed away peacefully of natural causes in Draper, Utah. Born to George Washington Glaittli and Martha Ann Brown Glaittli, George was the second of four children. He was raised in Sugarhouse, Utah and attended South High School after which at age 18 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He entered Officer Training School where he became a B-17 bomber pilot, eventually flying 34 missions over Germany. At the conclusion of WWII, he returned home and married the love of his life, Donna Arlene Tate. They built a home in Holladay, Utah where they raised six children. Grandfather to 18 grandchildren, and great grandfather to 23 great grandchildren, George loved his family with all his heart. He was a devoted husband and father and in his later years he was known as, “Grandpa George,” by anyone who was lucky enough make his acquaintance.
George was a hard worker and blessed innumerable others with his generosity. He meant what he said when he asked family and friends, “What can I do for you?” He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, and served as a Bishop, among many other callings. His service to others was always given happily and with genuine caring, expecting nothing in return. His talent to grow things was evidenced by his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, the produce from which he fed family and neighbors alike. The ever-popular Glaittli family Sunday night snacks were open to all and featured the delectable products from George’s “little farm.” He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and taking his family boating on Flaming Gorge. George had an unparalleled passion for ice cream, which he offered to anyone who came to visit. He was the perfect host and made everyone feel right at home. After losing his beloved Donna to cancer 22 years ago, George continued to lead his family with steadfastness and love.
George is preceded in death by his darling Donna, sister Dorothy Homer, and brother Donald Glaittli. He is survived by his brother Raymond Glaittli, and children, Julie (Kirk) Woolley, Lynne (Scott) Peterson, Douglas (Kathy) Glaittli, David Glaittli, James (Shannon) Glaittli and Jeanne Glaittli.
The family would like to thank all those who cared for George during his residency at the Bee Hive Home in Draper, Utah.
