Gunther Heinz Mowes

Gunther spent his boyhood enjoying the outdoors, going on long bike rides, and playing soccer. He had a lifelong love for learning and developed many hobbies, becoming a skilled woodworker, building and flying model airplanes, designing intricate model railroad cities, and pruning and caring for his bonsai trees. He also loved to travel, finding joy in discovering new places as well as returning to familiar ones.

Professionally, Gunther excelled as a manufacturing engineer. He served faithfully in many callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His deep and abiding faith was evident in the way he ministered to others, always going the extra mile in every assignment. Though he remained fond of the country of his birth, he was immensely proud to be a citizen of the United States and took great pride in his son and grandsons who served in the military.

Gunther married his sweetheart, Hannelore Gaap, on July 14, 1956, in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was a dedicated provider who wanted every opportunity for his family. In 1960, he and Hannelore courageously crossed the ocean to begin a new life in Canada with their three-year-old daughter. Just a year later, they continued their journey to the United States, bringing with them their three-week-old son. They made California their home for more than 50 years.

Gunther is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Edgar. He leaves behind his loving wife, Hannelore Mowes; two children, daughter Pearl (Lynn) Giles and son Michael (Tamara) Mowes; 7 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He has left a lasting legacy and a hole in the hearts of all who loved him.

Morning viewing will be held on December 5, 2025, from 10:00 am to 10:45 am at Harvest Fields Ward, located at 1600 S 4500 W, Syracuse, Utah, 84075.

The funeral service will take place on the same day, December 5, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, also at Harvest Fields Ward.

Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Millcreek, Utah, 84106.
