December 25, 1934 – December 11, 2020
“One of the good guys” was called home. Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend, John Pete Kapos, left us December 11, 2020, after a brief illness and a short two weeks before his 86th birthday. John was humbly born in his parents’ home kitchen on Christmas Day, 1934, to Pete and Tasia Kapos in Kaysville, Utah. He was raised on the family farm with his twin brother, Nick, and sister, Sophia. After graduating from Davis High School, John joined the Army Reserves and graduated from Weber State College.
John met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Hatupis, at church on Easter Sunday. They were married October 9, 1960, and recently celebrated their 60 years together. They had three adoring children, seven grandchildren and built a strong family legacy.
John was very social and enjoyed meeting, talking with, and helping people. Professionally, he was a salesman who sold diesel trucks at International Harvester, real estate, and RV trailers. In his “retired” years he was a funeral director and helped hundreds put their family members to rest throughout Utah.
John’s favorite times were spent with his family. He treasured long drives and road trips with Mary, he planned his week and schedule around his grandkids’ sporting events. He was a great dad who coached his sons when they were young and never missed his grandchildren’s basketball, soccer, or baseball games. He enjoyed managing his rental properties, visiting with his renters daily, even in November of this year; eating lunch at Coachmans Restaurant - having his daily soup, and spending time at his home in Manila, Utah near Flaming Gorge where he took pleasure in fishing, deer hunting, and boating. John was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Order of AHEPA, he volunteered annually at the Salt Lake Greek Festival, spent hours taking care of his plentiful garden, and completing word search books. He was an avid Utah Jazz and University of Utah football and basketball fan and enjoyed watching old Westerns on TV.
He was a generous and caring man, many times coming home without his jacket as he gave it to someone who needed it more. A friend to all, with an adventurous, vibrant personality and huge heart, he will be missed by so many including his loving wife, Mary, daughter Pam (Bill) Zoumadakis, sons Lee (Kim) and Todd (Joy) Kapos; grandkids Michael, Aaron, and Maria Zoumadakis, Zachary, Anthony, John, and Elpitha Kapos. He is also survived by his sister Sophia (Bill) Drossos and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and brother Nick (Cynthia) Kapos.
Due to Covid restrictions, private family services will be held. In the spirit of the season and to remember John’s friendship and kindhearted nature, donations may be made in his name to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. May your Memory be Eternal dearest Grandpa.
